A U.S. Coast Guardsman will need $31,000 to fly her dog back home to Washington D.C. from Yokota Air Base in Japan. The portly 221-pound English mastiff can’t fly home via United Airlines since they changed their policy after the death of a dog mistakenly stowed in an overhead compartment by an airline attendant.

According to Stars and Stripes, the pooch named George Jefferson, who belongs to Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer McKay, was originally shipped to Japan by United air cargo service at the cost of $3,200. But now the temporary suspension of flying with pets by the airline is under review and is not expected to be completed until May 1. The Air Force Air Mobility Command does not transport pets and carriers with a combined weight of more than 150 pounds.

“I’m a single-parent service member just trying to get home to the U.S. with my dog and my son,” McKay stated. “The alternative options to do this are financially unreasonable, but my dog is my family and I won’t leave him behind.”

Unfortunately, George weighs too much to fly on other airlines and the only one that could work for the family is All Nippon Airways at a cost of $31,000. Many airlines don’t transport English mastiffs because of their size.

McKay starts a new assignment in Washington D.C. in June.

Some things just don’t seem fair especially for the men and women who serve our country.

  1. If this service woman’s dog was brought over there by plane, someone needs to find a way that costs what she paid the first time to get her dog home. How about the US Government helping this service woman?

  2. I do feel for this woman but… If you are in a career where you know you will have frequent job changes which necessitate moving, why do you have such a huge breed dog??? A little common sense here folks.
The military issues waivers for all sorts of things so surely the air mobility command could give a waiver to get this dog back to the US and then the woman needs to use some common sense.

  3. This woman is serving our country. She considers the dog “family” as it should be and that says it all for me. She shouldn’t have to pay a damn dime to have her dog flown back home.

  4. She Paid the over $3400.00 to get her dog there… It WAS and IS her Family… This IS an OUTRAGOUS PRICE this AIRLINE is TRYING to BILK this UNITED STATES MILITRARY OFFICER and FEMALE out of!!!! TOTAL POLITICAL BULLSHIT!!! GOING ON HERE!!!

  5. That is a lot of money, surely there is a company or ship that will be able to help her, but yes a go fund me would probably help

  6. I’m sorry. I can not wrap my head around $31,000 to ship anything. I hope she can get her dog home safely. What if she and the dog returned by ship?
