Urgent homeless dog out of time

Update 6/29/18: Riley’s deadline was extended to Friday morning at 11 a.m. (Must be tagged for rescue by this time)

The last call, “urgent,” warning has been issued for a three-year-old dog who has been overlooked at a Texas animal control facility. Riley, a pit bull mix, may be a bit plain on the outside…and a bit rough around the edges, but people who have met him believe that his inner beauty more than makes up for anything that could be lacking on the outside.

What volunteers have said about this death row dog

Riley is boisterous inside of his kennel (who wouldn’t want to get out of that enclosure?!), but he settles nicely when he is out with people. One of Riley’s visitors wrote:

“He became a sweet, calm guy that stuck to me like Velcro. He kept looking up at me as though asking what he could do to please. He sat for treats. He walked OK on a leash. He appeared to be house trained. He didn’t have a problem meeting other dogs in the bay. A kennel attendant also assured me that he gets along with other dogs. He weighs approximately 40 pounds and could use some groceries.”

The urgency facing this homeless shelter dog

Riley is out of time. Why? The facility is full and space is needed…not even one day ago, the Facebook page for Shelter Animals of Garland, Mesquite and Rowlette, Texas wrote:

❌ ❌CODE RED ❌ ❌SHELTER IS FULL.
I NEED TO EXIT THE MESQUITE SHELTER BEFORE 11:00 AM, THURSDAY, 06/28.**IF SPACE IS NEEDED,I MAY BE PULLED EARLIER!**

In black and white – Riley needs to be out by 11 a.m. on Thursday (today) – or he will be put down.

  1. TOO PLAIN?? That is a bunch of hogwash – Riley is a beautiful dog that Texas could care less about and with their poor reputation for any sort of animal welfare they will kill him never giving him a fair chance to be adopted. Being a pit bull or pit bull mix is just another reason to ‘euthanize’ him – this breed of dog is treated so poorly by shelters they are only too happy to destroy a beautiful animal because of their undeserved reputation. PLEASE give Riley a chance for life – he deserves one.

  2. Man!It’s a death sentence to be a stray and turned in to a “shelter” in Texas! The worst state in the USA for homeless dogs ????????.Hope this little guy gets a happy ending, but probably not…..,Do these Texas shelters even network the animals???You give him hours before you kill him…c’mon u can do better!!!!

  3. Did he make it out I pray he did poor baby I hope someone gave him a chance he’s only 3 why do you have to kill him but I guess that is the Texas way

  4. Please let us know if Riley made it–I pray!

Sadly, sometimes I don’t receive the posts until it is WAY too late to try to do anything or after the tragedy has already happened.

  5. Just checked the Shelter Animals of Garland, Mesquite and Rowlett, Texas facebook page. It says tagged by rescue, but the date is confusing. Does anyone know if this is correct?
