In Haverhill, Massachusetts, a 17-year-old is a true hero after he kicked in the back window of a burning car to save a trapped dog. Alex Gabriel had been grocery shopping at the Market Basket on Tuesday when a car in the parking lot caught on fire.

According to WhdhNews, Alex spotted the dog in the car as the smoke began to billow out from the engine. Alex immediately reacted by smashing the back window and pulled the dog out despite the smoke burning his eyes and hampering his vision. The teen knew it was only a matter of seconds before the entire car would be engulfed in flames, and hence there would have been no chance to save the frightened dog.

Alex’s quick thinking and action saved  Boomer, the full-grown, five-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog. And on Wednesday, Jennifer Berbue, the dog’s owner, who was so very grateful that Alex saved her dog, reunited Boomer and the teen.

“I saw that it was burning, and I ran out there in a panic,” stated Jennifer. She has no idea what she would have done had Alex not been there to save her dog. “Boomer is everything to us, to our family, so that would be devastating.”

As a token of their appreciation, Boomer’s human family handed Alex a reward card with money and a picture of the dog he saved which Alex stated he will set up as his background on his cellphone.

You’re an awesome guy Alex. You make us all proud of your generation.
