The Witchita Police are asking for the public’s help identifying the person who abandoned a badly injured dog on Tuesday morning. The dog was found with numerous puncture wounds and is believed to have been used as a bait dog for fighting dogs in training.

According to the rescue group Beauties and Beasts, Animal Control had received a report of an injured dog unable to walk. It appeared he had been dumped in the area of North Market and suffered from punctures, tears and a severe break to his left front paw as well as a fractured right front leg. Most likely he had been involved in a dog fight; there was no evidence of blood in the area except for the small amount where the dog was found. The dog, dubbed Miller, did not get to the spot where he was discovered by himself.

As Miller patiently waited for the veterinarian staff to examine him, a volunteer stayed with him.

“Despite the excruciating pain he has endured he has been the sweetest boy during his arrival to the vet clinic and the initial examination of his severe injuries. This is heartbreaking. We are thankful to the Good Samaritan that found him and the Animal Control Officer that stayed by his side and reached out for help to get the vet care he needed,” the group posted on their Facebook page.

Wichita Animal Control originally thought the dog had been hit by a car, but Miller’s injuries, including the puncture wounds and the possibility his mouth may have been tied shut, indicates the common practice of how bait dogs are treated and used.

“We are thankful to the AC officer that lovingly stayed by his side while reaching out for help to save his life and to the compassionate woman at the vet clinic that immediately wrote a check for $500 towards his care,” the group posted later in the day.

Beauties and Beasts are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible party in Miller’s abuse. Sadly, Miller’s leg will need to be amputated, but he is expected to recover and will be available for adoption when he is healed.

Anyone with information about Miller is asked to contact Wichita animal shelter 316-350-3360 or email LT. Sigman [email protected].

  1. Please, Community come out & find persons responsible & make them pay – and hopefully this dog will survive. Why does this continue to happen – because law enforcement is not enforced. Thank everyone for taking care of dog.

  2. Ghetto dwellers won’t tell on each other: “Snitches get stitches.” If you think those people have any compassion or capacity to nurture animals, you’re out of your mind! I wish it was otherwise.

  3. Miller sweet baby. Hope you get the best of homes when you are well. Guessing he was stolen from his loving family. Perhaps they will come forth. Miller is blessed with gentleness so i doubt he was raised for the pits. He is a good weight and appears well cared for except now for the injuries. WICHITA — Anyone know this dog?

  4. I am praying for Miller’s complete healing and new forever loving home and for this dog fighting ring to be found.

  5. So sad and disturbing to know this happens. I wish there was no dog fighting at all. Put an end to this horrible activity!

  6. At the local, state and federal level, politicians need to take charge of do fighting that has become a big business for some. Stiffer fines for those in attendance as well as the owners of these poor animals. Local police in some states are on the take for these fights, so there is a lot of corruption to go around. Higher rewards for informents who know exactly who these people are in our communities. This is not an isolated incident but throughout this country and getting worse. If you are aware of any dog fighting inform the authorities.

  7. Hope they go after the dog fighters themselves and not just fix the dog, this needs to be stopped now! Somebody knows something about this!

  8. anyone who fights or watches dog fighting should have the same thing done to them. put them in the ring with a big bubba, no holds barred.

  9. Something has to be done this is so sad police need to investigate now someone knows something it’s just plain evil

  10. In a perfect world the people that participate in dog fighting, would be caught and suffer the consequences. Training and letting dogs kill and maim each other needs to be stopped. Why it continues to go unnoticed by authorities is anyone’s guess. I pray for Miller, may he heal quickly and live out his remaining years in a home full of love.

  11. Horrible!!!! Thank god he was saved by the good Samaritan. I hope he finds a forever loving home. The ones who dis this to him. May they rot in HELL!!
