Ten-year-old Rio had been surrendered to the Detroit Animal Care and Control after his owner died. How could someone explain to the golden retriever that his loyalty no longer counted; his owner had died and the family was unable to care for him? And so Rio – extremely sad, shutdown and depressed just stared into the corner.

“Even the slightest pet sends him into extreme fear, he is absolutely traumatized. In just a short span, he’s lost his human and the life that he knew became different.”

When the live release team at the shelter realized there were limited options with Rio,  the compassionate staff called upon Detroit Dog Rescue for help. From there it became important to find the senior a foster home where he could slowly decompress; his depression and kennel neurosis precluded his chances for survival.

“Rio’s immediate placement will be with two of our field volunteers, Ryan and Tasha. They are going to go slow, give whole heartedly, and provide him with the patience he needs,” the Detroit Dog Rescue posted on their Facebook page.

Rio’s medical care will continue to be addressed, but for right now, for today, he has had enough. Yet again, he’s in a place that’s new for him, a place he doesn’t understand.”

Rio’s troubles, however didn’t end there. His health problems include heartworms and his road to recovery is expected to be a long one.

And on a very special Valentine’s Day celebration for the saddest dog in Detroit, a new photo appeared; one of hope, snuggles and love. Shown with field volunteer Ryan, both he and his wife Tasha took Rio to their home to decompress. Just one day later – Rio is starting to learn people are indeed kind and here to help. Once again, a picture is worth a thousand words.

  1. Ryan and Tasha….may the Lord bless you and keep you. Thank you so very much for taking this faithful companion who lost his owner….and showing him love and compassion again.

  2. HUGE THANK YOU TO RYAN AND TASHA for stepping up and helping Rio – that face alone is heartbreaking and because you care, he is now opening up and realizing that there is kindness in this world. I hope all goes well and Rio gets the safe loving home he so well deserves, maybe yours?
