On Sunday, Sully, former President George H.W. Bush’s service dog, was photographed lying down in front of the casket bearing the remains of his beloved human. The heartbreaking photo emerged just as Air Force One was landing in Houston to transport the former president’s remains to Washington, D.C.
Sully’s pose moved people all over the world; his head over his paw and his face resting mournfully on the floor still keeping watch over George H.W. Bush, brought out the emotion, devotion and the true attachment our dogs have garnered in our hearts.
The photo was shared to Sully’s Instagram account on Sunday with the caption ‘Mission complete.’ The specially trained yellow Labrador retriever was given to the former president in June by a nonprofit group, America’s VetDogs which pairs the dogs with needy veterans.

Sully will be joining the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s Facility Dog Program.
He will be working alongside fellow VetDogs facility dogs SGT Dillon and SGT Truman who are there to assist with physical and occupational therapy to wounded soldiers and active duty personnel during their journey to recovery at Walter Reed Bethesda,” the organization posted on their social media page.
After the news of the former president’s death, America’s VetDogs tweeted an image of Bush being pushed in a wheelchair while holding the leash of Sully walking beside him.
“Our condolences go out to the Bush family at this time. America’s VetDog is deeply saddened by the loss of President George H.W. Bush. It was truly an honor to have provided service dog Sully to be by the president’s side for the past several months.”
Sully was able to retrieve dropped items, open and close doors, push an emergency button and support the former president when he stood up. The dog’s Instagram account has more than 79,000 followers.
Sully will accompany the casket to Washington D.C. on Monday. Sully was named after the pilot who successfully landed a passenger jet in 2009 on the Hudson River saving the lives of 155 passengers. The dog was given to the former president shortly after the passing of former First Lady Barbara Bush.
