Just days before Christmas, seven-month-old Adelaide was struck by a car. Fortunately a Good Samaritan in Houston, Texas witnessed the accident on Thursday and picked the injured dog off of the street, gently placed her in the back of his pickup truck and brought her to the shelter.

Adelaide needs a “Christmas miracle” posted Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, the organization that immediately came to the rescue of the seriously injured puppy. According to the veterinarian at the shelter, Adelaide suffered two broken legs and would need both extensive as well as expensive surgery to ever walk again.

On Friday morning, the puppy was wheeled out of the shelter because she is unable to walk. Onlookers were puzzled watching the puppy look back at the other dogs as she was leaving.

“Does she know she is safe? Is she saying goodbye?,” one of the rescuers questioned.

Now on heavy pain medication, placed on intravenous and x-rayed, Adelaide’s prognosis is worrisome. Her right elbow bone is severely fractured and the exposed bone is protruding out of her skin. The trauma on her right leg has resulted in a serious infection as well making it very dangerous and complicated for surgery to save her leg. As for her left leg, that is broken as well, but not as severe; she will still need surgery.

This morning Adelaide will be transported to San Antonio where a board certified orthopedic surgeon will perform the multiple surgeries hoping to save both of her legs.

“Adelaide is only a puppy at 7 to 8 months old, just a baby who’s so sweet even though in severe pain and suffering such serious trauma,” Stacey explained on the rescue’s Facebook page. “Where was her owner and why was she on  the streets susceptible to being hit by a car like this?”

Veterinarian costs are expected to be very expensive. Donations to help this innocent victim of her owner’s negligence can be made here.

  1. Adelaide is lucky to have been rescued by a stranger and taken to this shelter which in turn contacted RDR of NYC. This Rescue performs miracles on animals they take charge of and Adelaide will be given the best care possible for her front legs. Wish I had a million dollars to give to organizations like this.
