In Tunica, Mississippi,  Sandy Williams, the director of the Tunica Humane Society had been driving south on Highway 61 when she spotted a dog in the median. And there she was on Monday evening -am emaciated pup clinging to live, ignored by speeding cars whizzing by and eating a decomposing skunk.

According to Sandy’s Tunica Humane Society’s Facebook post, she pulled off of the highway and slowly approached the pitiful dog – not realizing immediately that the foul odor was not the dog dying but the rotting skunk the dog had been eating to stave off her hunger pains. And so Sandy ran back to her car and brought over some dog food to lure the dog to safety. When finally no cars were in sight, she managed to grab the dog by her hind leg.

“She cried out in fear but never tried to bite,” Sandy wrote. “She was much too weak to put up a fight.”

“How in the world could this precious dog get to this point without someone intervening on her behalf? Her condition didn’t happen overnight… She named the dog Mari.” (short for Miracle)

Mari is in the care of the Horn Lake Animal Hospital, and although her prognosis is not considered hopeless, the dog has a long journey back to health. She has a secondary infection from mange which apparently has been left untreated since birth. Her eyes are badly damaged, and she has deep cracks in her skin which are oozing and infected. In addition she is severely anemic, is heartworm positive, has infected ears and is full of parasites. Who can even imagine the suffering this dog has endured?

Mari will be in the hospital until her condition is more stable.

“The amazing thing about Mari. As horrible as she must feel, she still wags her tail when you talk to her. I cannot wait to see this precious dog come out on the other side…,” Sandy wrote.

Get well soon Mari. Your days of suffering are over.

  1. Another example of how selfish people are and could care less about the suffering of others, especially animals. Can anyone imagine how horrible it feels to have raw skin exposed to the elements, hair falling out, starving, full of parasites and people just don’t give a damn by speeding by and not helping this poor baby.

  2. Poor baby god bless you for helping this dog I don’t know how people can just drive by when a animal needs help no souls

  3. The PUTRID BUZZARD VOMIT that treated this pathetic little animal ( a helpless dog) no less… SHOULD be found and tied to a tree stripped and a gallon of sweet clover honey poured over the head and torso… left for 72 hours!!!! Hopefully the Black Birds, Foxes, Skunks, Rats, and a bear or two would find this delectable fodder for the early spring…

  4. What is the matter with people? No one stopped this help this innocent until Sandy drove up? SHAME. Tunica population have no brains or just don’t give a shit? SHAME.

  5. Thank you Sandy for helping this poor baby. I can’t wait to see her improvements…..she wags her tale, so she has not given up on the human race although she has been severely let down so far. Please keep us posted on this precious pup.

  6. Many prayers for Mari with a lot of love. I can see you will be a beautiful dog on the other side. Keep up the fight. You are worth it.

  7. Thank u 4 helping this poor baby!!! I can’t believe no one stopped 2 help her!! I’m so grateful u did!! I pray she makes a full recovery and better yet someone will give her a great 4ever home!

  8. Prime example of what level the human population has sunk to – how could anyone drive past this poor dog and just keep going?? If not for Sandy Williams Mari would have surely died either by starvation or being run over by one of the human trash who would have kept on going – I will never understand how anyone could just ignore this poor dog’s plight. Thank God she was saved and will hopefully fully recover and find a safe loving home. Apparently Tunica, Mississippi is one selfish, inconsiderate, cruel city with the compassion of a box of rocks
