In a tragic case of animal cruelty, a homeless woman in El Paso, Texas was arrested on Monday night after her dog died in a shopping cart fire started by a candle she used to keep her dog warm.

According to the Elpasotexas.gov press release, officers from the Pebble Hills Command responded to assist Animal Services at a fire in a shopping cart located at George Dieter Drive and found a deceased dog. Detectives with the Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit were able to trace the owner of the dog, identified as Lori Jean Pollard, 38, and arrested her for animal cruelty (non livestock torture and reckless)

“Detectives were able to locate the owner of the canine and the investigation revealed that the owner had placed a candle in the shopping cart in order to keep the canine warm,” the news release stated. “Flammables located in the cart caught fire which resulted in the death of the canine.

The breed of the deceased dog has not been made available. Pollard was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility in lieu of an $8,500 bond.

  1. This story is absolutely “GUT and HEART WRENTCHING” It is more than likely a moronic thought on my part to think that there would be shelter’s in that state for the individuals ( like the lady who found herself out in the freezing cold with her animal) and NO PLACE for them to go!!! No by any STRETCH of The IMAGINE AM I CONDONING HER SKEWED THINKING IN HOW SHE TRIED TO KEEP THE ANIMAL FROM BEING COLD AS IT WASN”T THOUGHT OUT AT ALL!!! I am just heart sick that the fire happened and the little dog perished in pain… NOW WATCH!!! will she be placed in prison for 5 years, fined and enormous amount of money … How many Horrible Abuse CASES HAVE all of US… read about in TEXASS over the last year even where the “perp” was just let go with no accountability!!!! SICK! SICK! SICK!

  2. What a horrible way for this dog to die. No way out and to leave a candle there is beyond crazy. Homeless person who I suppose cares about her dog, yet did something to kill him. Now arrested and in jail because she can’t pay the bond of course. Give these people jobs and get them off the streets. Jobs Americans won’t do is not true. Retrain those who can work so they can contribute to their country.

  3. A lot of homeless people are mentally ill. The average person would have known the candle would catch the cart on fire, but if she really added a candle because she wanted to keep the dog warm she didn’t do this maliciously. Just a sad story all the way around.

    • Simply because she lacked malicious intent is NO EXCUSE for the abhorrent suffering this poor animal experienced before dying…. any more than the f*cking idiot who severly burned that little Maltese mix while using human hair coloring products to dye her purple! BOTH deserve imprisonment … and at least she won’t be homeless there (nor able to incinerate any MORE companions through sheer lunacy!)…

  4. Just another case of stupid and the dog paid the ultimate price! RIP puppy, your human failed you. Didn’t know there are so many stupid people in the world, maybe we should suspend breeding for awhile and concentrate on educating the people that are here on earth? 🙁

  5. I would say she isn’t the smartest bulb in the bunch and her stupidity cost her dog it’s life! She now has a warm home in the El Paso County Detention Facility. I bet she will be there awhile in lieu of an $8,500 bond.

  6. This is a horrible story!!
This poor sweet dog had to pay with his or her life.
With saying this I know people will think “what are you thinking”.
In a way I also feel sorry the woman because she was trying to do the wright thing by trying to keep her dog warm.
I know some homeless people with animals. These animals mean the world to them.
We don’t know her story and what issues she might have, but we should look at the bigger picture.
We need to realize this was a great big mistake and not purposely do with intent to harm, but to keep warm.
So please feel free to bash me, but until you either know someone who is homeless or can walk in their shoes don’t be as hard on this woman who just trying to keep her dog warm.

  7. Another reason for homeless shelters to open up areas where animals are allowed to be with their owners – I have no sympathy for this woman whose idiotic decision cost an innocent dog its life BUT many homeless who have animals will not go into shelters since animals are not allowed and they won’t leave them. It is time to think outside the box and since this country is so concerned about those who have no home, then it is time to include both homeless humans & their animal companions in providing shelter for both together. This tragedy could have been prevented.

  8. ???????? HEARTBREAKING ???????? ANGEL PUP, I’M SO VERY SORRY, YOU DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. REST IN SWEET HEAVENLY PEACE, ANGEL PUP. YOU ARE NOW IN THE TENDER LOVING CARE OF JESUS.
