A German shepherd, believed to be responsible for multiple attacks on livestock, was killed this week in West Valley City, Utah. According to multiple sources, over the past year the shepherd had attacked livestock which was being raised by students at the Roots Charter high school.

The allegations against the dog

As reported by Fox 13 News, the dog had posed a threat to livestock and children since the summer of 2017…someone had apparently abandoned the dog in the area. On Thursday, an animal services officer fired a shot which killed the dog who was reported to be “tracking livestock” in a pasture.

Animal Shelter statement

Animal Services, which operates a no-kill shelter, issued a statement about the killing of the dog:

“Initial efforts to avoid lethal measures and capture the dog were unsuccessful and the dog became increasingly aggressive.  As this situation escalated over the past few weeks, it became clear that this threat needed to be neutralized as quickly as possible.”

According to a prior Fox News story, someone in the area had been providing sanctuary to the shepherd and had helped the dog avoid being captured by animal services officers. The dog is believed to be responsible for dozens of livestock deaths.

  1. Sad that this shepherd had to have his life ended this way. Whoever just dropped him off there to fend for himself should have the most miserable life and come down with a incurable, painful disease and slowly die. This poor shepherd was only trying to survive the best he could under the conditions he was given. Wish they had tried to rescue this dog initially and that the person who was protecting this dog, did him a huge disservice.

  2. The dog was abandoned of course it was going to go after livestock, it was hungry what would you expect. There was nothing else they could do but kill the poor dog? Of course not, it was much easier to just kill it. Disgusting!

  3. So, money, once again, is the motivation. They could have put out some good quality food for the dog, but that would generate from a feeling of compassion, which most business owners (especially those engaged in killing of other animals for profit) don’t have.

  4. The animal control people could have used a tranquilizer dart instead of a bullet. That was stupid and lazy on their part. Save the bullet for the crappy people that dump innocent animals. One between the eyes for them.
