Shelter speaks out after blind, senior dog found wandering
Spread the love

The Virginia animal shelter that recently adopted out a senior, blind dog who was bonded to his six-year-old friend, Blue Dozer, has spoken out after the dog was found wandering alone, over 100 miles away from his adopter. On Wednesday, Richmond Animal Care and Control advised Facebook followers that both dogs were back in their care.

The animal shelter stated:

I am very glad to announce that both OJ and Blue Dozer have just been reunited and are safely back at RACC.

Adding words of warning to those who have voiced their deep displeasure about the person who adopted the dogs not long ago:

We very much appreciate the outpouring of community support but want to be very clear about a few details. First, we do not support any act of violence or threat of violence towards anyone. Ever. The only thing that matters is these sweet dogs get to stay together-and in the end that’s what we have. I will delete posts made on this page that are mean or harmful. Our work is about love and compassion for animals -please extend that kindness to humans 😊

Many people criticized the shelter’s adoption process – Richmond Animal Care and Control responded:

Our practices, adoption policy and choices to make adoptions are done in the best interest of each animal. We can not account for decisions that are made by citizens after adoption and work diligently to keep our open adoption process successful. In the end, we have to trust people-trust them to love the pets we have cared for, and trust them to do what is best.

As to the future plans for these bonded dogs – for now, they will simply be loved and cared for by shelter staff. The shelter explained:

Lastly, we will not be doing anything with OJ & Dozer in the next few days other than snuggling them together. I will keep you posted if and when they are available for adoption.

  1. How on earth did this dog get so far away from home? I’m glad he was found and ok. I can sympathize with their plight, you can ask the questions, screen the applications but once the people with the dogs walk out the front door, it’s anyone’s guess what happens. They have to trust the person is representing themselves truthfully. I applaud them for getting both dogs back when they saw a problem and know they will find them a good home.

  2. Those of us who voiced concern and safety for both these dogs are very glad they are back in the shelter receiving the love and caring of the staff. A simple explanation of what happened to both after being adopted should be provided to us. We know you had the blind dog,OJ, but how did you get Blue Doze back? Adoptions are not always perfect no matter how much time is spent on checking out the new adopters but possibly you could provide a better explanation as to what happened. This is not the shelters fault, but possibly this will help others when they rehome a pet too.

  3. So glad you have them back and they are together like you said you are not responsible for actions of other people after an adoption I am just so happy they are back together and they are safe with you that’s what this is all about great job

  5. What in the world happened here !! Thank goodness they are safe and back!! Did they only want doze? And dump the other dog? So sad!!

  6. I don’t understand why people would criticize the shelter. How in the world would they know someone was going to abandon the dog. they did an excellent job in reuniting them

  7. I am glad that shelters are using microchipping nowadays. It makes it harder to commit the crime for the dishonest and easier to bring the justice.
SO happy dogs are back TOGETHER.

  8. I think Richmond Animal Care and Control needs to be more stringent in their adoption practices. These two dogs were adopted out to someone who obviously could have cared less about their welfare and OJ was found stranded 100 miles away – he sure did not get there by himself. He was dumped by a cruel so called ‘human’ who did not care that he was blind. And when confronted, the so called ‘adopter’ did not want to give up Dozer – I am very relieved the shelter got both back unharmed BUT think their adoption protocol needs to be much more intense. These animals depend on you to ensure they are adopted into safe loving homes – OJ and Dozer were not.
