Staff at an animal shelter in Illinois has stated that they “regret” the accidental killing of a local couple’s dog. According to Central Illinois Proud, Moses was being held at the Tazewell County Animal Control in quarantine after he bit someone who entered his family’s yard without warning.

What happened at the dog’s home?

Moses had to be held at the animal control agency for observation after biting a maintenance worker who had entered the family’s backyard. The dog’s owner, Jennifer Wang, explained why he was held to the news agency, “They said that they would like to keep him for 10 days under quarantine to make sure that everything was safe with him.”

The fatal mistake

Unfortunately Moses will never come home as was planned – someone at the animal control agency accidentally euthanized him. According to reports, someone confused Moses with another dog. Moses’ human dad, recounted his conversation with the shelter employee who made the mistake, he told the news agency:

“I asked him why did you still euthanize him? He told me he was not thinking, he said he didn’t verify, he just went ahead and did it.”

Shelter statement about fatal mistake

The news agency reached out to the animal control agency regarding the accidental killing. The statement confirms Moses’ family’s story:

”On August 7th, Tazewell County Animal Control mistakenly euthanized a dog that was being held in our facility on a 10-day bite quarantine.”

Adding:

“Tazewell County truly regrets this error. Tazewell County will be reviewing policies and procedures to prevent any such occurrence from happening in the future.”

Moses’ family is hoping to find a lawyer to help them.

  1. You need to sue the hell out of them and make it a mandatory stipulation that this is a no kill shelter permanently! I am so sorry for your horrible loss!

  2. I hope that worker was fired because his excuse is beyond wrong. Wasn’t thinking, did it anyway? What was he doing, playing with his phone? A beautiful dog gone for no reason other than stupidity. If this was up to date on his shots, there was no need to remove him nor quarantine him. So sad for this family who thought they were doing the right thing by following what the AC told them to do. Stand up for your pet against workers who really are ignorant or have no actual knowledge of the laws pertaining to animals. RIP and hope the owners are remembering the wonderful times they had with their dog and coping as best they can.

      • Replies like this are why people won’t take us seriously. I’m as appalled as anyone that this happened. However, many think of us animal lovers as a bunch of whackos, and these baseless and crude comments don’t help our cause.
Does this incident need to be investigated? Absolutely. Should the employee be fired? Probably. But we need to approach these issues in such a way, that we don’t come off as undesirable as those we’re fighting against.

  3. They “regret” having killed someone’s dog? This is ridiculous, a shelter should NEVER make a mistake like this. A dog in quarantine shouldn’t be anywhere near a dog that is scheduled to be euthanized! Reviewing policies and procedures to prevent any such occurrence from happening in the future is a whole bunch to late. Something like this should not happen in the first place. I hope this family finds a lawyer and sues Tazewell County Animal Control and gets some justice for their Moses!

  4. Problem with suing, as I understand it, is that you will only get the “$”value of the dog. These stories are heartrendingly upsetting sickening. But there is a greater tragedy here. Yes it is a heartbreak for that couple. But what about the dog and all the other animals that are “euthanized”, not accidentally but deliberately?
AND WHEN will people STOP using the word “Euthanized” incorrectly? You are not “euthanizing” a healthy animal, you are killing it. You “euthanize” to end suffering!

  5. First off fire that asshole employee .. then sue their asses off. Geeee … we made a mistake.
We just killed your dog because we’re idiots

  6. Ok I give up. How the fuck does something like this happen??? Accidentally??? Obviously they weren’t following proper procedures. This is fuckin bullshit. So their pet was with a stranger when he was MURDERED/SLAUGHTERED because some fuckin moron had his head up his ass and made a mistake??? No this is unacceptable.

  7. Infuriating is the only word I can think of – these poor people never expected some brain dead idiot to literally murder their beloved dog – his miserable excuse ‘not thinking’ is more like ‘not caring’. What an idiot and the shelter can have all the damn regrets they want – maybe a better system should be installed so no other animal is killed so some jerk

  8. Have any of you made mistakes at your work? in your home? in your car? Everyone makes mistakes, I’m sorry for their loss too. But have thought about the person that made the mistake? Does he a family? A pet? a mortgage? This is a human being that made a horrible mistake. I don’t know this person, but if all you could put yourselves in his shoes for 1 minute, instead of getting on your high horses and thinking the worst of this individual human being! Have some empathy!
