Updated information following the publication of this article – PALS stated:

Ace is now at the shelter!! 🎉 We have both dogs safely here but they have injuries that are being treated. There is an ongoing investigation with the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Department. We are working with them to seek justice for our animals.

An Iowa animal shelter is reaching out to the public for help after someone broke into their facility and stole two dogs. One of the dogs, a German shepherd named Max, was later recovered, but a boxer named Ace is still missing.

On Monday, the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS), in Grinnell, let its Facebook followers know about the crime:

We are sad to report that PALS was broken into last night, and two of our dogs were stolen. The back door leading right into our cats and kittens room was broken, and Max, our young and playful German Shepherd, was taken along with Ace, our worried little Boxer. Thankfully, Max was found this morning near the 100 block of Main St. in Grinnell. His tail was injured, but he is now back safely with us.

But we are still praying for the safe return of Ace (pictured). He absolutely hates the cold, and even if you don’t know him, you can tell he’s an anxious dog.

The shelter added:

“It’s disgusting that people would smash their way into an animal shelter, of all places, and steal two loving dogs. PALS is a non-profit that was created by the animal-loving community. We will get through this—and celebrate Ace’s return—with our community’s support.”

The animal shelter believes that the break-in happened at some point between 7:30 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. on March 5. Anyone with information is asked to contact PALS or the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Department. PALS: office phone (641) 236-4288, email [email protected]. Sheriff’s Dept non-emergency line: (641) 623-5679.

To get recent postings in your Facebook feed, you must also hover your mouse over the word “following” and then click “see first” from the drop-down menu. You may want to check back with your favorite pages on occasion because Facebook often changes your settings, no longer having your favorites among those to “see first.”

  1. I hope they weren’t stolen to be used as bait dogs for dogfighting! That would be terrible! Glad one of them was found safe! Hoping for a safe return for Ace!

    • Thank you for the update – installing surveillance cameras would be a good investment so they can identify these maggots. So glad both dogs were found but someone injured them and they need to pay a stiff price for their cruel actions and be forced to pay for both Max and Ace’s medical bills.

  2. Glad they were found and back in the shelter being treated for injuries. Hopefully police will catch the person(s) who did this. Their safety and well being right now is the main concern.
