In Mesa, Arizona, an abandoned newborn foal was rescued on Tuesday by the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group. According to organization’s Facebook page, local teens called the hotline after finding the premature foal.

“A call to our hotline yesterday resulted in our fieldteam rushing out Coon Bluff, where a couple of kids had found a tiny newborn all alone and unable to get up. After finding out from an alert bystander that the tiny baby had already been there for at least 6 hours without a mare, we rushed it to the hospital (since newborns can die quickly without receiving mothersmilk in triple digit temparatures). The rest of our fieldteam stayed behind to search for a possible mother.”

Although the foal had been dehydrated, underweight; a foal his age should weight 66 pounds and overheated, his laboratory tests came back within the normal ranges.

“He is not septic and has no broken bones. He weighs only 33 pounds and cannot regulate his own temperature,” the group posted.

The foal requires around the clock care, and this little guy sleeps a lot, but wakes up every hour because he’s hungry. He has already stolen hearts.

“We are extremely busy with many important projects right now and we are in urgent need of donations to carry on our important work.
He does not have a name yet, so we will be holding a contest to name him, for everyone who would like to become his monthly sponsor.
That will be our first post tomorrow morning, because the little guy has woken up for his feeding and we have to go now.

The foal’s mother has not been found, and there have been no other horses in the area where he was discovered. He is the smallest horse the team has ever rescued. There is an estimated 100 horses that live along the Salt River in the Tonto National Forest. When federal officials tried to remove the herd that have freely roamed the area for 100 years, a firestorm of outrage emerged and since then legislation has been passed to protect the herd.

Check out this little guy’s progress. Too cute video #2

  1. This foal will have a very good life thanks to this organization. Glad he was rescued when he was or else there would not be this happy outcome. Thanks for all your help

  2. Bless you all for taking care of this little one. Noting the stars and stripes in the background and the white on his forhead, maybe a good name would be “Star”/
