In Yreka, California, the Northern California Carr fire has been wreaking havoc on humans and wildlife alike. First responders have been working nonstop protecting property, people, pets and wild animals. One rescued fawn was especially grateful.

On Saturday, Facebook photos from the California Highway Patrol showed how officers rescued the fawn found wandering alone within the fire zone. Officers stated the baby was “way too close to the fire to allow him to stay until his mom returned.” And so the fawn was scooped up into the officer’s arms and brought to safety.

The San Francisco CHP officers contacted a local wildlife rescue to take custody of the little one. With the officer holding the fawn, his description under the Facebook photo had to bring a momentary smile to everyone.

“City cops in the country! SF Area CHP units have been deployed to the #CARR fires in Redding. Not sure we know what we’re doing in this pic but this baby deer was pulled from danger and turned over to a rescue organization. God speed CAL FIRE and all other fire and first responder agencies providing mutual aid. You are truly the Bravest.”

By Sunday, the fire had burned more than 89,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes. Firefighters expect to have the blaze better controlled by early Monday. At least six people, including a firefighter have perished in the blaze.

In response to the devastating wildfires in Shasta County, Tri Counties Bank has created a verified GoFundMe campaign to help those impacted by the fires.
