A puppy’s final moments: Shelter ‘misfit’ hung his head when nobody came

Rudolph is barely out of “puppyhood”, but on Saturday afternoon the Manhattan facility of New York Animal Care Centers will end his life. Deemed as a shelter “misfit” there were no presents under the tree awaiting an exciting Christmas morning. There was no warm fire place to snuggle near and although the weather has been frightful, no snowflakes were to be felt on his tongue as he played outside with a loving family.

This young dog leaves the world today wondering what he did wrong. An attendant will lead him down a quiet hall, and within moments a life once full of promise and love will forever be gone.

A volunteer familiar with this pup had this to offer:

“Rudolf looks like a little choir boy in his kennel. He is so gorgeous and angelic looking. He likes caresses, a scratch on his nose and takes duck jerkies gently from my fingers. Outside, though, he pulls , jumps, runs, twirls and plays like he was the only ballerina on stage, one that was not trained at the New City Ballet…He can sit(briefly) for a treat or a ball or a toy, his eyes full of excitement, his tail wagging but springs quickly into his Jack in the Box outfit…Yes, our Rudolf is full of life and needs some curbing to have his enthusiasm channeled into activities dog and owner can fully enjoy together. If you are an active owner and feel that Rudolf would make the ideal pupil for you to train and build into a state of the art pet.”

Sadly, it may be a crime to be an active puppy unlucky enough to have arrived at the Manhattan shelter. Judge for yourself as you watch the video as an animal control officer engages in puppy frolic. Sure Rudolph needs manners, but…

  1. WTF!!! Why do you have to keep KILLING these innocent loving animals???? This is BULLSHIT and has to STOP!!!! There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why you have to keep KILLING!!!! SAVE THEM!!!

  2. I am heartbroken for this treasure (& for all the wonderful treasures we never hear about) losing their lives because no one knew about their situation in time to help….. if this shelter advertised “critical” listings with more than a few hours notice of pending euthanasia, I think their euthanasia rates would decline….. or is that what the shelter managers want: more euthanized animals to sell to the rendering plants???????

    • Me too Sarah…..why do id they post this and nort give us time to look for him a foster or forever family….he is too beautiful……I pledge $10.00 tonight & hopefully others will follow.

  3. How heartbreaking, no rescue or savior coming and how sad “only for those who can get to the shelter IN PERSON need apply? Why wait until the day this poor baby will die to let us know. There should be other rules in place for a young dog like this, Rudolph is only a puppy and they make him sound like he is dangerous “recommend an adult only home”. Disgusting! Some of us don’t live close enough to “get to the shelter”!

  4. The ONLY misfits in NYCACC and its affiliates are Risa Weinstock and Malloy – and along with the so called ‘evaluators’ (who could not evaluate a trip to the bathroom) they discriminate as to which animal is worthy of being put up for adoption AND if it is a pit bull you can be damn well assured they will NEVER get a chance – 18 hours and they kill them – this place is NO shelter is an Auschwitz for Animals.

  5. He is safe but how many or that is just like him that get killed my this New York Shelter
They can post as many 10 to 15 dogs daily to be kill the next day
and never mind how many Cats and Kittens
Shame on you New York and the people that give them to kill shelters
You as a owner take your dogs or cats to these places
Just stick the needles in them. You are the one that kill them because this kind of shelter don’t give a shit how many they kill
