When a photo of the four-month-old shepherd appeared on social media Tuesday afternoon, animal advocates gasped in shock. Viewers were horrified at the amount of ticks on the puppy.  Volunteers from Animal Services in the City of Mesquite Texas reached out for help  on Facebook.

“This poor 3-4 month old Shepherd mix was just surrendered in the field and as you can see its AWFUL condition. He has been given a nexgard and some good food, but he is in desperate need of rescue immediately.”

And the plea for help worked. Early Tuesday evening, Dallas DogRRR – Rescue Rehab.Reform stepped forward for the dog now named Caleb.

“His ears are too heavy with ticks to perk them up, and he’s content resting his weary head in your hand for support.

We’re going to call him CALEB, and he was such a good boy at the vet. He was poked, scraped, examined, and by the time I left him, he finally gave me a little kiss. We’re running a full blood panel, but at this time he’s not in need of a transfusion. He will remain at the vet for observation tonight, and we will slowly watch the ticks die and fall off like Bernie. To see them all over his ears, neck, in between his toes, and on his back was truly heart wrenching,” the organization posted on their Facebook page introducing the puppy to the rescue community.

Information concerning Caleb’s surrender has not been clarified, however updates will be provided when made available. For now, the emphasis is on Caleb’s recovery and this very sweet dog getting a new chance at life.

  1. OMG: WHY was this precious little treasure allowed to get into this state???

He is gorgeous!!! Glad he was able to be saved!!!

Poor guy…… bad prior owners…… Failed him terribly…… could easily have been a tragedy……

Hope he finds a wonderful new furever home where he will be treated as a beloved family member……

Lock the useless POS former owner up and lose the keys……. He should only leave prison in a pine box……..

  2. The old owners should be charged to his vet care, this is pure NEGLECT!!! There is NO EXCUSE for this dog to have that many ticks on him. I get freaked out when I see one on my dog! This young dog must have Lyme disease from all these ticks!

  3. Hope that not only will Caleb recover, but find a loving home. As for the previous scum who left this dog here to probably die, he should have ticks all over his body and left there to eat away at him. If found, he needs to pay for this pups treatments too.

  4. Prayers that this sweet boy will heal, and he will find a LOVING, COMPASSIONATE home and family to give him the attention he so deserves and has never had.

  5. GET this Poor Little Fellow the HELL OUT OF TEXASS!!! Land of the Most Ruthless and Heartless People in the UNITED STATES!!! This so called Lone Star State Really outdoes IT self in Cruel, Torture , Neglect, Abandonment, Maiming, to the needy and harmless animal population.. I actually think These AMORAL, HOSTILE, EVIL BASTARDS try and outdo the PREVIOUS ASSULT on a harmless animal
