In Fairfax, Virginia, a dog became stuck under the roots of a 40-foot tree as he chased a groundhog on Friday. The owner couldn’t find the dog for more than 24 hours, but heard whimpering sounds emanating from beneath the ground and called Fairfax County Fire and Rescue for help.

According to the organization’s Facebook page, the owner

“…went back out today, heard whimper and found him stuck.”

Although it took a lot of digging with a hand saw, the pooch was freed.

“Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Puppy rescued! Short time ago Truck 429, Tysons Corner, C-Shift rescued a puppy who was stuck under the roots of a 40 ft tree for over 24 hours. He was chasing a groundhog Friday and owner could not find. She went back out today, heard whimper, and found him stuck. Lots of digging and use of hand saw by crew finally freed the pup! The Paw Patrol would be proud! #fcfrd”

This lucky little pooch hasn’t been the only one stuck in a tree while exercising canine chasing techniques. Nearly a year ago, Rocco the dachshund found himself trapped in a tree after crawling through a groundhog hole near the tree and was then unable to get out. The Salem Fire Department in Kentucky cut a hole in the tree with a chainsaw to free him.
