A police K9 in Waco, Texas, is dead after being shot by an officer on Friday. According to CBS DFW, a warrant was being served when the K9, a Belgian Malinois, bit his handler. The dog was shot and killed by another officer.

The details

As reported by the Waco Tribune, a warrant was being served to someone at a residence on the 2000 block of Seneca Avenue. Waco police Officer Garen Bynum told the news agency, “another officer on scene was forced to put down the canine to save the officer.”

The injured officer was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor wounds. The police K9’s name has not been released. A post on Friday evening by the Waco Police Department asked for prayers for the department’s K9 team.

  1. Minor injuries but the poor dog has been killed for it? On this same page a story of man jailed for decades for shooting a police dog. Texas – need we go any further? It seems it’s just a crazy place full of guns and dog killers either side of the law. Something has to change but it won’t while Texans do nothing but sit on the fence.

  2. Well, once again, a K9 overcomes his fear of the one who abuses him daily, and chooses the correct target.

He lost his life because of it, but at least will not have to suffer what the public is blocked from seeing and hearing.

  3. Ridiculous the dog bit his handler? Why? There had to be a reason. After all they say pit bulls for example are only mean because of the way they are treated so I say the handlers dog bit him because that is how he was trained and why wasn’t the dog shot with a tranquilizer then at least he could have been put to sleep at the vet.
I am starting to agree with the rest of the population that police just love shooting I think they should have mental evaluations on a regular basis this process of shoot to KILL is OUT OF HAND why do they have tasers if they don’t even use them? I have no sympathy for this handlers bite I sympathize for this poor animal. What a creep kick him off the force if he could not handle his animal and kick the other one off too because he obviously doesn’t know how to take an animal into custody without shooting it to death. THATS WHY WE HAVE DOG CATCHERS YOU IDIOTS

  4. Rest in peace brave K-9, I find it hard to believe they had to resort to killing the K-9 to get the dog to release it’s handler. Another case of “feared for the officer’s safety”? only it was his own dog not a house hold pet! b

  5. What did the bloody Officer do to the police dog to bite him. This makes one wonder. Nothing would surprise me. Too many dogs are being murdered by the Police.
It must be investigated and it wouldn’t surprise me that the Officer did something cruel to this precious K9. And of course his precious life was taken. He could not defend himself so killing him was the easy way out. RIP dear fella.

  6. I hate this article because of its contents!! I believe this handler mistreated the pup and the guy who saw the pup retaliate to being mistreated, drew his gun!! Both need to be punished—-the loss of the pup is horrible and shouldn’t have happened!!

    • You are correct Jo, but this abuse, and even torture, is STANDARD in the military and paramilitary K9 units. In my county, K9’s have been killed just in the course of “training,” (hanging and kicking, etc.), but those don’t make the news. This is one of those things that is carefully concealed and lied about by the perpetrators and their departments. I worked on the inside of such a department, and am very familiar with their strategies.
