A K9 with the Houston Police Department was euthanized after suffering a terrible injury while chasing a suspect. On February 21, the Department alerted Facebook followers about the unexpected and tragic death of Rony, a Belgian Malinois:
“Overnight, we lost one of our own; K-9 Rony. Information known is that K-9 Rony and his partner, Senior Officer Dennis Shadden from the Tactical Operations Division were searching for a suspect that had been driving a stolen vehicle and subsequently led officers on a pursuit that ended when the suspect crashed into a bayou in Harris County and then fled on foot to a heavily wooded area. The suspect was eventually apprehended and faces charges.”
According to the Department, Rony was grievously injured in the midst of pursuing the suspect in the heavily wooded area. The wounded K9 was transported to a veterinarian for emergency treatment, but he did not survive.
According to The Maven, the nine-year-old dog was euthanized because of a shattered elbow. According to KTRK News, despite the shattered leg, Rony still tried to get up and chase after the suspect. The decision to put Rony down, rather than amputate his leg, was made because his other legs were “arthritic.”
Dr. Laura Ron told the news agency, “Amputating his leg would not be fair because that puts a lot more weight on his remaining legs that would make them fail and they’re already on a lot of medications so even though it was the most horrendous of options, it was the most fair for the dog.”

To get recent postings in your Facebook feed, you must also hover your mouse over the word “following” and then click “see first” from the drop-down menu. You may want to check back with your favorite pages on occasion because Facebook often changes your settings, no longer having your favorites among those to “see first.”

RIP K-9 Rony. You are now pain free and can run with all your pals, both animal and human. You did a wonderful service for your community and you will be missed by all who knew you.
RIP K-9 Rony, my condolences to your handler, family and fellow officers, I know how much you will be missed.
I have to wonder if his other legs were arthritic why wasn’t he retired…he could have lived longer as a pet.
Rip Rony!! Sorry for your loss. He died a hero & Thanks for your service!! Prayers to his handler & family & Dept. Until you meet again enjoy all those great memories.
He was arthritic? It sounds like he should have been enjoying his retirement not chasing fools. RIP Rony. You should have been on a Vay-K from your dangerous profession. God bless
Why was a dog with arthritis used in a criminal pursuit? Sad they destroyed the dog without a chance at retirement. RIP Officer Rony.
My question exactly – personally, I don’t put much faith in this story – to just kill him instead of retiring him is very suspicious – Rory was a police officer – would they have done this to a human officer???? Then again, this is Texas where their treatment of animals is beyond lax. Rory deserved MUCH better.
