An Alabama police K9 died of heatstroke after being left in an outdoor kennel at a veterinary boarding facility. According to CBS 42 News, the German shepherd, Didi with the Snead Police Department, perished at a veterinary office outside of Blount County.

Criminal charges for K9’s death?

According to a press release from the Town of Snead, there will be no charges for the police dog’s death. After a thorough investigation, the department concluded that Didi’s death was accidental and unforeseeable. Didi was temporarily placed in an outdoor kennel which had pea gravel on the ground, full ventilation, plenty of water, and shade. According to the release, the shelter provided for K9 Didi meets current acceptable standards. The people caring for Didi have stated that she was checked on every five minutes – when she was found “unresponsive” efforts were made to cool her down, but it was too late.

Changes following K9’s death?

The Town of Snead has stated that experts are reviewing the current acceptable standards for outdoor shelter and there are questions regarding their safety in the intense heat of summer in the South.

Pet owners are encouraged to not only provide their pets with adequate water and shade, but to consider using misting systems and ensure that the flooring does not get too hot to touch. If pets cannot be brought inside, out of the intense heat, safety measures must be in place to prevent them from suffering the same fate that K9 Didi did.

  1. This is not rocket science people if you are hot outside think of what it would be like with a fur coat on use your heads! This dog was not checked on every 5 minutes those people are lying and there should absolutely be charges filed against them.

  2. This is total BS! If the kennel was within “acceptable standards”, then why is Didi dead? If Didi was checked every 5 minutes then they would have seen she was suffering, they are totally lying about this! This was far from “accidental and unforeseeable” and if they investigated it, they would know better. You would think a Veterinary kennel would know better! Rest in peace Didi, these morons let you down royally, you didn’t deserve this!

  3. Still people don’t realize that in a short time in this heat can affect a dog to not be able to breathe properly, convulse, and then die. Since they can’t talk, people have to think how a space would be for them to be in. If it is ok for you to stay in and not overheat, then an animal could too. If it is too hot and uncomfortable for you, it would be the same to your animal and even more so. Think of your animal and how he/she would feel and put yourself in their spot.

  4. They were checking her every 5 minutes? I call “BS”!!! If that were true they would be able to see her in distress and she surely would have been saved. They are liars

  5. No way do I believe this boarding kennel checked on DiDi every five minutes. If this had been done, she would not have died. And of course, no charges are being issued – so DiDi died and no one cared. If she had been better cared for she would still be alive. Shame on all of them.

  6. Since it was do hot, why didn’t they have her inside??? Sounds to me that their actions for putting Didi out in such weather is disgustingly stupid! The person who put her outside checking on her every five minutes is an outrageous lie!! Jail time and huge fines on that person, the manager of the facility and boarding kennel!!! Sick!!

  7. Are you trying to tell me a vet would not know it is too hot for a thick haired dog to be outside? I don’t think I would ever use him if that is the case. I pass a vet office on my way to work every morning and they have a big sign out front that says BRING YOUR PETS IN. It is too hot!!

  8. What a bunch of crap..really??? YOU THINK checking on here every 5 minutes she would have been able to overheat and die?? COME ON…you are the police!! These people are lying through their teeth. That dog could not have suffered heat stroke, and passed all within 5 minutes!! THAT WAS A LONG and torturous death for you K9 officer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
