In Wyoming County, West Virginia, the viral photo of a dog with his neck slashed by a butcher knife, posted on Facebook has led to the arrest of the pup’s owner. As the photo circulated through social media last week, the Mullens Police Department launched an investigation into suspected animal cruelty.

According to WVVANews, the Mullen Police arrested Ricky Hanshaw, Jr., 32, on charges of animal cruelty and criminal invasion of privacy. Hanshaw is accused of cutting the dog’s neck with a butcher knife. The pup, named Brutus is currently in the care of Wyoming Paw Patrol.

“… He had surgery and is doing fine as of this evening. The cut was extremely close to a main artery and also his voice box. But is all stitched up now. He does have a wonderful rescue commitment as well. I also picked up his sibling Ariel tonight so she is safe now too. While I know that emotions are running high we need to let the police do their jobs with this case. So please no more speculations. It will all come out in the wash. We owe a HUGE SHOUT OUT TO RAY TOLER. He went above and beyond what I could have asked for today with this puppy and his sister. He went to the clinic and waited on Brutus to come out of surgery and helped me retrieve Ariel once we both made it back to wyco. Thank you to all who have messaged and donated so far. We appreciate every single one of you. Keep Brutus in your thoughts. He has a rough recovery ahead.”

Another dog in the home named Ariel was also removed and was not injured.

Bond for Hanshaw was set at $15,000, however a “no bond hold” was served for violation of parole.

If you would like to donate to Brutus’ rescue, contact Wyoming Paw Patrol PO Box 1105 Oceana, Wv 24870.

  1. Why would someone do this to their dog? Crazy people who should all be on a desert island and destroy each other. Glad this dog and his sister are safe.

  2. I am so sick of this monsters hurting animals I can not STAND IT!!! But when the courts just give them a slap on the wrist….we can not expect any change. Someday….when it is way too late, the justice system is going to realize anyone who terrorizes and hurts animals WILL hurt a human.

  3. I’m beginning to think that if all the criminals and animal abusers were put on an island, there would be hardly any people in the rest of the world!

  4. GIANT THANK YOU TO RAY TOLAR FOR SAVING BRUTUS AND ARIAL – Your actions saved two lives. Now, for Ricky Henshaw – may your stay in jail give you the same treatment you dealt to Brutus – hopefully, some predatory inmates make YOU a victim in every way possible – may you get shanked in the shower so we never have to look at your ugly puss again and they can bury your vile ass in some landfill with the rest of the trash.
