A pet owner dying from cancer reached out to Stray Rescue of St. Louis earlier this week in an emotional plea to help her find a loving home for her rescue dog.

Stray Rescue shared the letter so carefully and emotionally penned from Shell’s owner along with Shell’s photo. Her mother had adopted the dog nine years ago from the rescue and after her mother suffered a stroke and developed Alzheimer’s disease, the sweet dog came to live with her.

“Dear Stray Rescue,
I am writing you cause I need you to take my dog, Shell…I’ve been fighting cancer for a few months and if you’re reading this I lost my battle. I need for my baby girl to be taken care of in a home…In these days all I do is worry about what’s going to happen to her. I love this girl, she is my daughter.”

Shell is a very sweet girl. She’s been threw(sic) a lot, so she has trouble with trust in the beginning. She loves to cuddle but don’t like to be carried. She’s very small…”

Shell is safe with the rescue – no need to worry, but she needs a new home; someone who can give this angel a loving and secure future. In the meantime,

“Shell is now with us, safe and sound in our Executive Director, Cassady’s office. She is scared, but we will shower her with so much love. If someone has been lonely and would like to give Shell a home, with plenty of patience and understanding, please fill out an application.”

The woman was not named in the letter openly shared with supporters of the Stray Rescue of St. Louis Facebook page, but has asked for interested parties to fill out an adoption application.

No kidding – there are angels everywhere even among the tears so often shed for our companions who cannot speak for themselves.

  1. I Write This While Crying My Eyes OUT!!!! Being a Registered Nurse for over 25 years , it is difficult to watch someone dying worry about their little Pets. Actually that is how I have come to be A Dachshund Care Taker so Several various size, age, color and Biggest of All Temperamental would have a safe place to call home for their remaining time on earth without their original owners!!! Those of us that know how very attached bonds ( especially with elderly folks ) to love , cuddle and devote every moment to their pet, How difficult it is to adjust for many of these now really frightened pups are…. Even while dying this WONDERFUL PET MOM WANTED to MAKE SURE THE LOVE of HER LIFE IS WELL CARED FOR TILL SHELL is reunited with her later on… I FEEL confident ST Louis STRAY RESCUE will SEE THIS IS DONE… What a Wonderful Group of CARING SHELTER WORKER’s !!

  2. Heartbreaking, just heartbreaking, Bless this kind lady and her little dog, Please someone come through for her and give this little one a loving, forever home.

  3. There are so many angels in the world–I am confident that one of them will take in this precious ittle sweetheart! Let us know if you need donations!

  4. This is truly what it means to be a pet guardian and to have this selfless love for your animal. First her mom who can no longer take care of her now this wonderful woman. I pray this woman finds peace for herself as well as Shell. Although the rescue will care for her, being in her own home would be so much better for Shell and hope that happens quickly for all concerned. Please all these people who care so deeply for these animals.
