Peggy Sue had a great last day: Dumped shelter dog’s life mattered

Peggy Sue, perhaps one of the sweetest bull dogs you could ever hope to have met, had been dumped unceremoniously at the Downey Shelter in California because she was no longer able to produce puppies. She had given birth to litter after litter and made her owners thousands of dollars, but when she needed medical care, it was dismissed until Peggy Sue’s breathing became so labored, her owners didn’t want to deal with their dog anymore.

“I don’t know how her family let her go so long without medical care. They dumped her a Los Angeles County’s highest intake shelter to perish. She was so afraid, and as they walked away, she watched them leave her to the sounds of cries from other dogs,” wrote Sal Valdenpena on his Facebook page.

And yes, Peggy Sue was rescued even  though late Monday afternoon her life ended. A veterinarian examination diagnosed the dog with metastatic cancer; it had started in her breast and spread to her lungs where a 12-inch centimeter lesion was found causing her respiratory discomfort.

Dogs live for today; they don’t anticipate tomorrow, and Peggy Sue enjoyed her day with Sal. She had cheeseburgers, french fries and treats. They walked in the park until she was tired.

“Today, I held YOUR dog in my arms as she took her final breath telling her heaven wasn’t a scary place,” Sal wrote aiming his attention and anger at Peggy Sue’s owner. “You are the worst kind of humans. The ones who show no compassion, but are fueled by greed.”

Peggy Sue mattered; she was more than a dumped shelter dog, and her life will be remembered.

Many thanks to Sal and all of the compassionate volunteers. Many thanks to Big Bones Canine Rescue for being there for Peggy Sue.

Rest in peace Peggy Sue.

  1. If not for Sal Peggy Sue would have died lonely and unloved – I honor him for his selfless compassion for a dog that was used and dumped like garbage by sewer slime whose only priority was GREED. So help me if I could get my hands on these hunks of puke it would be a sorry day for them. Peggy Sue’s life mattered, theirs not one bit.

  2. I have not had a lot of positive thoughts about either Downey or Carson from what I have heard, BUT today I sit her with a Heavy Heart and Soul and ” ONE HELL OF ALOT OF RESPECT ” for Sal the Volunteers and Big Bones Rescue Members”!!! You DID the RIGHT and HUMANE THING and She had Caring Hands euthanize and be with her in the last moments of her time on earth. She went to the Rainbow Bridge a Happy and Content Girl ( even for that very short amount of time) For the Family that dumped her …. May they Meet their FATE IN A HORRIFIC FASHION with Just enough time to FLASH before by their EVIL EYES of Peggy SUE prior to their decent into HELL where THEY BOTH BELONG!!

  3. Sal, thank you for all you do for the dogs you can rescue. Sounds like Peggy Sue had a great last day and undoubtably more love in one day than she ever had in her life. Thank you for being with her as she made her transition. Run free, Peggy Sue. Thanks also for rescuing Toby. No matter how much time he has left, you will be there for Toby when he makes his transition. Bone cancer is incredibly painful.

  4. Tears……….tears………………. God bless you Sal. Peggy Sue had more fun and love on that one day than she did her whole life with greedy people.

  5. Why can they not arrest these horrible people and ban them permanently from contact with animals, children and elderly persons?

    • This is a typical breeder. The public should be made aware of this and maybe they would have second thoughts about buying that puppy and go to the shelter instead. I hope these people have a miserable painful life.

  6. Thank you Sal and all others who helped this precious pup know what true love and caring was before leaving this old world! Wish there was a way to put the owners on a NATIONAL REGISTRY so they would never be able to own, adopt or purchase another pet!!!

  7. BASTARDS WHO USE ANIMALS TO MAKE MONEY NEED TO ROT WITH CANCER. LAZY ASSHOLES LIKE THIS OWNER IS THE SCUMBAG OF THE END OF THE POLE AND A LOWLIFE DISGUSTING POS. I HOPE THEIR LIFE IS SO DAMN MISERABLE FROM THE TIME THEY TOOK THIS POOR DOG TO THE SHELTER. NOW I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE REST OF THE DOGS THEY TAKE IN SINCE THEY WILL DO THE SAME SHIT JUST FOR THEIR GREEDY ASS TO ENJOY.

  8. if i could get my hands on this owner i would make sure that she wished that she had never been born bloody selfish greedy BITCH. I hope karma gets her revenge on you SCUMBAG These sort of people should be banned for good in ever having another dog RIP Peggy Sue you did not deserve this

  9. RIP Peggy Sue. I’m happy you had a wonderful last day and to have someone with you to make that journey to the rainbow bridge. You’re free now so run and play. I’m sorry your POS owner failed you so miserably.

  10. My second dog have lung cancer and no one around her smoked so have no idea how she got that but, her breathing was just like Peggy Sue’s.She still ate ok, but as her breathing changed. we realized this was not an allergy or something like that. When we saw the x-ray the vet said it looked like someone who had been a heavy smoker. The cancer had spread too much in her lungs so rather than have her so uncomfortable, a few days later, we had her euthanized. Was there right with her and when they gave her the injection, she looked up me as if to say don’t cry, you did the best you could for me and I love you. There are events you will always remember and with all my pets can remember that last time.

  11. How do you look at a beautiful dog like Peggy Sue and see only dollar signs? What kind of scum treats a dog like that? Thank God for Sal! At least she knew the love and kindness she should have had her entire life in the last few days of her life. I hope the vermin who misused and abused this sweet girl get what they truly deserve. Peggy Sue is in heaven: they’ll rot in Hell.

  12. To the SUB-HUMAN, GREEDY SCUM who behaved like barbarians: eye for an eye; ye sow, so shall ye reap. I pray YOU are found by an aggressive cancer and do NOT have the resources for compassionate care. THEN, and only then, will you have some idea of what YOU put on this lovely dog that made you thousands of dollars. Period!
