In another heartwarming story of kindness, a Missouri pastor from the CrossBridge Baptist Church, carefully made his way onto an icy pond in his backyard to rescue a dog that had fallen through the melting ice.
According to the USA Today, Pastor Jeff Mann from Marshfield had just returned home when his wife heard something splashing around in their backyard pond. Moments later, she realized it was a dog. So what’s a hero to do?
“I figured I was going to fall in and I was just going to have to break the ice to get to him,” Jeff stated as he donned his boots, grabbed a rope and slowly ventured out onto the ice. “Once I was already out there, your mind starts running like ‘Man this is pretty dangerous’,” Jeff continued.
In the video, Mann calls for a life vest, but persevered while tossing the rope to the dog several times before the dog bit down on the rope – or should we call it his “lifeline.”? Mann was surprised and happy the dog bit down on the rope; otherwise he may have had to break through the ice to save the shivering pooch. The dog held onto the rope as he was pulled to safety.
It is unknown how long the neighbor’s dog had been in the freezing water, but he shook himself off, ate and played with the pastor’s own dog before leaving for the night. Jeff’s post on Facebook said it all:
“Neighbor’s dog got in my pond this afternoon. The pond is aerated. So there is no ice in the middle. This poor guy almost drowned. Selina Mann saw him from the kitchen window. He is a smart dog. I’m glad I didn’t want to take a polar bear plunge which I thought I was about too. The ice was cracking. I made some friends with PETA today! His new name is Lazarus!”
Awesome work Pastor Mann. You and your wife are heroes.

What a smart dog. I have never seen one grab the rope and there have been many, many water rescues posted over the years. The dog help save his own life. The Pastor really took a risk getting that far out on thin ice. Great team work.
