In Pembroke Pines, a 12-week-old puppy was brutally beaten and his 21-year-old owner told authorities the pup “fell in the shower.” Daniel Smith was charged on Wednesday with aggravated animal cruelty and is currently being held at the Broward County jail in Fort Lauderdale.
According to the Miami Herald, Smith brought the three-month-old puppy, named Dexter, to LeadER Animal Specialty Hospital and told the staff his pup “fell in the shower.” After examining the puppy, veterinarian Marcos Unis contacted authorities and stated the dog’s injuries had been consistent with blunt force trauma. Dexter presented with multiple skull fractures and abrasions on the back of his head.
Dexter’s condition has been stabilized. The hospital issued the following statement on Thursday.
“The Pembroke Pines Police Department, Animal Medical Center at Cooper City and our group have all been receiving quite a few adoption inquiries on Dexter. He is currently still being treated and as such, he is not available for adoption at this time.
If you are however interested, you can fill out an application on our website here: http://www.poochesinpines.com/application. Needless to say, we will be thoroughly screening applicants for Dexter when he is ready. We will post FB updates as it will be impossible to contact everyone individually who’s (sic) shown interest. Thank you for all of your support and patience.”
Smith voluntarily surrendered ownership of the puppy. Donations towards the pup’s medical expenses can be directed here.
