One-year-old Jodie saved from ‘crack house’ yet slated to die in NYC shelter

For Jodi, having been rescued by the Manhattan Animal Care Center saved his life. When found in a crack house, the one-year-old pooch had been covered in urine, his legs so necrotic he couldn’t walk, but  compassionate shelter veterinarians tended to his injuries and helped him to heal. He must have said to himself:

“I am right to have come to this place. I got a safe and clean den to sleep in, good meals, even treats and people to care for me and love me.”

This was Jodie’s past:

“…tethered in dirty home and neglected; seemingly healthy animal with urine scald or contact dermatitis on legs and scrotum (bleeding, irritated, peeling skin with scabs), scars throughout body.”

After recovering in isolation from his injuries and a bad case of kennel cough, Jodie was placed onto the adoption floor, but tragically the noise, confusion and frustrations has caused this pup to deteriorate, and for the last few days, he has become nervous outside his kennel, mouthy and harder to handle. Only the staff is allowed to walk him, and on Sunday evening, Jodie was listed to die Monday afternoon. Jodie wasn’t always difficult – many dogs have trouble adjusting to the hectic life in a crowded shelter.

A volunteer wrote:

“Little Jodi was my pearl of the day! A real sweetheart! He was hesitant to come out of his kennel. I had been warned…. Jodi has many sores on his feet, the result of poor housing conditions and has to be handled with care. Of course I will. Our medical staff is also closely attending to him. Jodi wanted nothing less than to lay across my lap, being hugged, petted, talked to and giving back millions of kisses. I knew I had to give him all the love I could to make up for his difficult past life. Jodi was happy, even wagging his tail, taking treats, his beautiful eyes were bright… Jodi is really cute, very medium size and dressed in a “marron glace” color coat. He is a valiant pup, 1 year old, and makes all efforts to walk around the yard. He even sits on command for me, hoping for more treats. I truly fell in love with this little guy who deserves finally his share of happiness with a caring and loving owner.”

  1. O spare me the fallacy that any shelter connected to NYCACC will do one thing to get Jodie adopted – they never have adoption events, do not show animals (especially pit bulls) and have a horrendous reputation for ever attempting to get any animal adopted. Their procedure is to spay/neuter and kill – they are paid to allow students to practice techniques for spay/neutering procedures, stick these animals in a cage, then give them as little time as possible before killing them – some are only given 18 hours before euthanizing – and NYCACC gets paid again for the dead bodies. They make out twice and the animals are nothing more than disposable objects to this damn dump – I call this place “Animal Auschwitz” because that is all it is – the only way pictures of animals that can be adopted are posted is because the volunteers have taken it upon themselves to do so – they are the only ones who care.

  2. This dog is stuck in a hell hole for animals – NYCACC and its affiliates do nothing to get any animal adopted. If not for the volunteers who post animal’s pictures on the internet, none of them would ever be seen. NYCACC sponsors no adoption events – their mantra is spay/neuter/kill – some animals get no more than 18 hours of life – this is their crap procedure – they kill 24/7 – this dump is nothing more than an Animal Auschwitz – run by Gestapo management. Jodi will never make it out – she was not abused once, she is being abused twice.

  3. Please foster or adopt this poor young dog.As we all know, shelters are noisy, crowded and confusing to animals who do not understand why they are there so they may lash out.I’ve been to that shelter and it is all those things and it is hard for me to imagine what it must be like for any animal picked up and brought there. They don’t understand what is happening and are so scared. We adopted our 7 year old Havanese mix last year and she had to be spayed (at the age of 6), before we could bring her home. So here she was with a cone around her neck and come to find out 2 days later she has ear infections. Took to vet and given drops that would last 30 days. Now you would never know she is the same dog we adopted a year ago.She is loving, enjoys her toys and follows us around all day. Gets groomed and I clean her face and ears every night. She also loves getting her teeth brushed with poultry flavored dog toothpaste. Definitely a different dog than what we saw a year ago. These animals need an adjustment period, so if you adopt, understand that it will take time through trial and error, but it is worth it. We love her so much and she knows it too. If necessary take your adopted shelter dog to a dog trainer for assistance. It does help.

  4. I have come to think of the NEW YORK CITY SHELTER”S as an EXTENSION OF TEXASS!!! THIS POST IS JUST total Bullshit!!! take this VICTIM yes VICTIM of gangs, monsters, abusers, & Crack Heads and brought back to optimal health … TO be EUTHANIZED by the SHELTER without NOTOCE or CONTACTING RESCUES .. WHERE IS RESCUE DOGS ROCK NEW YORK!!! after all this is the STATE they are BASED AT!!! This is enough to MAKE a BUZZARD PUKE!!! I feel so bad for this hopeful fellow!!! and look how they are treating him NOW!!! They are nothing short of ASS HOLES THEMSELVES>>> NOT THE VOLUNTEER”S the ADMINSTRATION!!

  5. They’ve already killed Jodie for “behavior” reasons. Which, of course, has more to do with the human behavior inside NYCACC than any dog’s behavior. Rest in peace, Jodie. I’m sorry you never ever stood a chance.

    • I’m telling you It always behavior reasons
That that what they say all the time
Look at the pic and tell me their ASSHOLES
Nothing but a death camp for animals there
As long as I remember them killing and I share them everyday to come and see Kitted because of dog’s behavior. Rest in Peace Sweetheart
They save you to kill you
