In an alleged violent crime of animal abuse in New Hanover County, North Carolina, a 21-year-old man has been charged with beating his girlfriend’s family Lab puppy to death.
According to Fox News, Christopher Simpson’s girlfriend’s family adopted the dog named Axel on December 1 from the New Hanover County Animal Services. On Christmas day, Simpson went over to the family’s home to visit, but when they went on to visit other family members, Simpson said he preferred to stay behind and play with the xbox.
Later that day, Simpson called his girlfriend telling her the dog had urinated on the floor and his shoe, and said when he hit the dog on the butt, the dog bit him. When the family returned, Axel was nowhere in sight and when found behind the family shed, the dog was dead. Simpson allegedly explained he didn’t know his own strength and when he punched the dog, he killed it.
Simpson was arrested on Monday and has been charged with felony animal cruelty. A necropsy performed on Axel determined the dog died of severe blunt trauma and internally bled to death. The veterinarian in charge of the postmortem exam stated this was the worst case of animal cruelty he had ever seen.
Simpson is currently free on $2,500 bond. In 2015, he was charged with domestic violence and animal cruelty in Brunswick County; those charges were dropped.
