In Wilmington, North Carolina, the man alleged to have beaten a five-month-old Lab puppy to death for peeing on his shoe Christmas day appeared in court on Tuesday afternoon in a drama-filled scene. Christopher Simpson, 21, has been charged with felony animal cruelty and one count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals. A necropsy performed on the deceased puppy determined he died of severe blunt trauma and internally bled to death. The veterinarian in charge of the postmortem exam stated this was the worst case of animal cruelty he had ever seen.
According to CbsNorthCarolina, prosecutors asked the judge to increase Simpson’s bond from $2,500 to $50,000 after he and his girlfriend had intentions of fleeing to Florida to avoid prosecution. Simpson appeared in court with his girlfriend, Alyssa Croom. The puppy had recently been adopted from the New Hanover County Animal Shelter by Alyssa’s parents.
The judge decided to increase Simpson’s bond to $100,000 and also ordered him not to have any animals in his presence if he makes bond. The audience in the courtroom quickly broke out in applause at which time the judge silenced the court.
After Simpson’s girlfriend stormed out of the courtroom, the judge had bailiffs bring her back and lectured her about her behavior.
