In Kenansville, North Carolina, time had run out for 13 dogs at the Duplin County Animal Shelter. On Monday, the shelter sent out an urgent plea on behalf of the 13 dogs; stating if no one came forward to adopt them, the dogs would be euthanized.

According to the Duplin County Animal Services Facebook page, the problem is a lack of space. It is truly a heartbreaking situation.

“We have a 14 kennel shelter with 819 sq miles and population of 60,000 people with 7-10 pets per person, with many strays and owner surrenders…. There is no where to house them nor support their care on the budget we are given, or any budget. We are too small of a shelter to be accepted into a grant program, so we search day in and day out for a place for them, we beg, we plead and most importantly we try to keep everyone informed so they have an opportunity to make a difference, where we cannot, our volunteers and supporters make such a huge difference for these furbabies.”

As of Monday, there were 77 dogs and cats at the shelter, and by law, the animals can only be kept for five days before they can either be rescued or adopted. This was the emergency plea:

“CODE RED!!! SOS!!! *****OUT OF TIME*****
THIS IS WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART THAT ALMOST EVERY DOG IN THIS SHELTER WILL BE OUT OF TIME TOMORROW AND HAVE NO INTEREST. EIGHT OF WHICH ARE UNDER 20LBS AND MANY OF THOSE ARE UNDER 10LBS. ALL ARE HW NEGATIVE. MAX AND BATMAN ARE BIGGER, BOTH GOOD WITH OTHER DOGS AND HEARTWORM NEGATIVE. DOG 1, DOG 2, DOG 3, DOG 4, DOG 5, DOG 6, COWBOY AND ZEUS ARE ALL SMALL DOGS AND HEARTWORM NEGATIVE!!”

Animal advocates lost no time responding. The shelter’s Facebook page reflected the outpouring of support on Tuesday morning as an overwhelming response with offers to help, foster and adopt came flooding in.

“WE WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THE AMAZING RESPONSE WE HAVE RECEIVED TO HELP OUR SHELTER PLACE THESE WONDERFUL AND LOVING DOGS AND CATS. WE ARE TRYING TO RESPOND TO EVERYONE’S EMAILS, MESSAGES AND PHONE CALLS ASAP. WE ARE A LITTLE OVERWHELMED RIGHT NOW AND TRYING TO GET THROUGH TO EVERYONE. PLEASE BE PATIENT AND KNOW THAT ALL DOGS AND CATS WILL HAVE AT LEAST ONE MORE DAY! THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHO HAS COME TOGETHER TO SAVE THESE BABIES! YESTERDAY THE SKIES SEEMED SO DARK, BUT TODAY THE SUN IS SHINING!! PLEASE KEEP SHARING OUR SHELTER AS WE ARE VERY SMALL AND WE DON’T GET MUCH ATTENTION. WE WILL NOT STOP UNTIL EVERY DOG AND CAT ARE SAFE!”

Please be patient and above all  – be positive. Give the staff a chance to respond. Animal advocates are making a difference. Imagine how this shelter is breathing a sigh of relief knowing that help is on the way.
