K-9 Officer Knox led Pasco County Sheriff’s deputies to a Land O’Lakes man wanted for assaulting a Hernando sheriff’s deputy on Tuesday. The high speed chase through two counties ended with the arrest of Paul Daniel Smith, who was videoed on an officer’s bodycam, showing his head just above the water in a nearby swamp.

The video, posted on the Facebook page of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, shows Knox licking Smith’s face after the dog led his fellow officers to the suspect.

“Stop resisting. Look you’re coming out,” a deputy yelled over to Smith. “I know that,” Smith replied. “Just don’t put them on tight.” “Yeah right,” the deputy replied.

Smith’s bad day began earlier when Hernando County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call. While questioning Smith, they noted his license plate on his truck had been stolen and tried to arrest him. Smith, instead, took off in his truck, and it wasn’t until he hit a pole that he stopped and fled on foot into a nearby swamp.

According to the Bradenton Herald, Smith was arrested on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing to elude and violation of probation. He is also charged with several felonies in Hernando County

Check out the video here.

The video shows the track just before the suspect is discovered by K9Knox and initial efforts to remove the suspect from the thick mud. He was later freed with the assistance of several other deputies.

We do want to warn viewers that there is coarse language used by the suspect in this video.
