A young mother, who recently gave birth to a baby girl, was killed while trying to protect a small dog from being shot. According to WAFB News, the 23-year-old victim, identified as Cherish Smith, was shot in the stomach when she put herself between the shooter, identified as 27-year-old Rhykem Rogers, and the dog.
The tragic incident took place Sunday, in the early morning hours, at a house in Baker, Louisiana. According to the Advocate, Rogers was trying to hit his brother’s dog – the brothers were said to have been in a “heated argument” before the shooting took place.
The victim had just given birth to her baby three weeks ago. In an interview, Baker Police Chief Carl Dunn expressed sadness over the tragic situation, “For me to imagine these two young children – one is 2-weeks-old, one is 3-years-old – to grow up without their mother. That’s heartbreaking.”
Rogers is facing charges for negligent homicide and illegal use of a weapon; he was booked into jail and held on a $31,000 bond.
