On Friday, the Neptune Township (New Jersey) police posted a humorous yet compassionate story on their Facebook page about “Pork Roll,” a lost pig wandering near a local Dunkin’ Donuts store.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the pig had been spotted wandering through the neighborhood. No one wanted to take a chance the little guy could get hurt or even struck by a vehicle. The story told by the department began like this:

“Police Officers are expected to wear many hats during their shift that go far beyond enforcing laws. Officers might need to mediate conflicts between roommates, treat patients until EMS arrives, and sometimes they even need to wrangle a pig or two. Yes, we at the Neptune Township Police Department are well aware of the irony, but this is the truth. Over the holiday weekend, P.O. Blewitt responded to a report of a pig running loose in the area of RT 33 and RT 35.”

And as the police arrived, the tension mounted:

“Upon arrival, he found “Pork Roll” running hog-wild, most likely looking for an evening coffee and donut from Dunkin’ Donuts. He managed to catch the well-fed hog and take him into custody for questioning and to provide him with a job application as our new mascot. Shortly after, he was whisked away by the Monmouth County SPCA for safekeeping until he was later retrieved by his owner.”

Be assured that Pork Roll has been returned to his family.

In addition, Monmouth County has been working towards better protections for our animal friends. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Monmouth County SPCA have teamed up to introduce the Animal Cruelty Hotline. This hotline is specifically for reporting of animal abuse or mistreatment. Concerned citizens can call the number 24/7 to report tips on possible animal cruelty directly to the detectives that investigate these concerns. Callers can remain anonymous, but are asked to provide as much information as possible to aid the investigations. If you have a concern regarding possible animal cruelty, call 877-898-PAWS (877-898-7297).

We hope you had a fun ride in the police car Pork Roll.
