A Labrador retriever with a facial deformity has found Internet fame. His name is now Beaux Tox, but for five years he lived in an Austin, Texas backyard because his owner’s cats didn’t like the dog in the house. Ironically, he had been named Lucky.

Six-years ago, Beaux Tox had been born with a malformed skull, after having been crushed by his six brothers and sisters in his mother’s womb. An MRI confirmed his deformity had no effect on his intelligence, however the breeder couldn’t sell the deformed puppy; his sunken skull, and his eyes too close together didn’t make for a cute puppy. And so Lucky was given away and  for most of his life, he spent tethered to a chain –  neglected and untrained.

When it came time for his owners to move away, they contacted a local animal rescue group who unsuccessfully tried to find a new home for the dog.

When an animal advocate posted the dog’s photo on social media about a year ago, Jamie Hulit just knew she wanted this dog. According  to Today.com, Hulit stated,

“I called my friend and said, ‘I want that dog. I don’t even want to foster him, I want him.'”

Hulit, an animal rescuer and volunteer who lives in Austin, drove out to the home where the dog had been living until he could be placed in a new home. Sadly he had been neglected, weighed only 42 pounds and tested positive for heartworms as well as having been covered in fleas. When brought to the veterinarian, Dr. Rydberg, explained the dog’s serious health problems. Jamie opted to try and save his life.

For much of his first month at the vet, Beaux remained on oxygen and several times he almost died. Fortunately, the pooch was a fighter, and by the end of three months he weighed enough to begin his heartworm treatments;  months later Beaux was finally given a clean bill of health even though he is blind in his right eye and deaf in his left ear.

The healthy pooch now weighs 108 pounds and shares a home with two other dogs. Beaux always wears a tie to soften his looks since many people are scared of his appearance when they first meet him. And now a year later, Jamie doesn’t regret the money she spent nor the hours involved helping Beaux reclaim his life.
