In Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, a man has been charged with killing 14 of his cats and two dogs before setting his home on fire. Ronald T. Vancosky, 41, has been charged by the Carbonale Police with arson and animal cruelty.
According to the Times-Tribune, the suspect has a history of mental illness and suffers from schizophrenia. He allegedly strangled and stabbed the animals because he believed they had all been infested with mites and that was the only way to stop it. After he is set the house on fire, neighbors spotted him walking down the street in a dazed condition.
A police report states the suspect had canceled having lunch with his wife and stayed in the house – stabbed the animals, poured gasoline on a pile of brush and branches he collected; including pouring gas on his wife’s bed and clothing. He then lit the fire and walked away.
When interviewed by police, Vancosky admitted what he had done and stated he killed the pets so they wouldn’t suffer. Vancosky has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, arson endangering persons, aggravated arson, and arson and related offenses.
