A man, captured on surveillance video driving away from an animal shelter where he dumped a dog in a parking lot, is speaking out with his side of the story. The damning video, posted by an employee of the Hawkins County Humane Society in Tennessee, shows a man taking a dog out of a truck and then driving away as the dog frantically chases after…right onto a busy roadway.

The man’s story

The man, who has not been named, has stated that the dog wasn’t his, reports the Times News.

The man, communicating through a letter written by an attorney, explains to the animal shelter that the dog was a stray who he had cared for over a two week period. The man explains that he had to leave town and could not keep the dog because it was aggressive to his own smaller dog.

The man drove to the shelter on Saturday, during business hours, but the shelter was closed because of a quarantine – the man’s “understanding” was that the shelter would care for the dog, apparently even if the dog was left in the parking lot.

The video

The video reveals that the man made no attempt to get a staff member’s attention and drove away – allowing the dog to chase after him onto Highway 11-W. As soon as employees realized what was happening, they chased after the dog and saved him from being hit by cars.

The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office will be investigating the situation to see if the man will face charges for abandonment.

Shelter Manager Sandy Behnke recounted what happened on Saturday:

“I yelled (for volunteers) Emily and Laura, and I was running down the highway after this dog swerving in and out of cars chasing this truck. Finally we got the dog corralled to the side of the road, and got him back to the shelter. We’re inside the building and he pulled in and dumped a loose dog in the parking lot — and then the dog is chasing him. Obviously that’s not the right way to do it. If he had tied the dog to a tree in the shade, I would have felt a lot better about it.”

The dog

The dog, a two-year-old heeler dubbed Rawhide, is in good health. He is expected to be available for adoption within the next two weeks.

  1. Do dogs run after people like that who AREN’T their humans? If he’d only had him two weeks, I doubt it. If he were attacking his small dog, would he really have kept him that long, especially allowing him to become so attached? Don’t think so. I doubt the dog would even have been allowed in the house, judging how the man disposed of him.

How often do people do this without a second thought? I don’t understand people, and I don’t want to.

  2. What a HUGE liar! There is NO way this is not HIS dog. I’ve cared for dogs for a week or 2, they do NOT chase you down and jump all over you the way this dog did to him. He also KNEW he was WRONG in what he was about to do, THAT’S WHY he dumped and left. PERIOD! I pray the wrath of God finds this sub-human maggot with the SAME treatment, but 100000 fold WORSE! Eye for an eye, arrogant ass wipe!
