A Florida man, desperate to save his cat from being killed by a neighbor’s two dogs, shot a border collie. According to the Miami Herald, on Monday afternoon 55-year-old Drew Caterson resorted to grabbing his hand gun to shoot at the dogs when they failed to release his cat, Pirate, who was being ripped apart.

One dog ran away from Caterson’s yard, but the other dog, a border collie named Jackson, was shot in the head and died – the  Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies who responded to the scene noted that Caterson was visibly distraught over the situation – as was 52-year-old Robert Davis, who was the owner of the dogs.

Pirate, a 10-year-old cat, died from the injuries sustained in the dog attack. He was on his owner’s property when Davis’ dogs attacked him. The Assistant District Attorney, Jon Byrne, has stated that there are no criminal offenses stemming from the incident – he stated that it was a “tragedy all around.”

  1. Shame on Robert Davis the owner of the dogs who let them run loose and shame on Drew Caterson for not keeping his cat indoors. Both owners are to blame for the death of their pets. I hope and pray they learned something. The ones I feel sorry for are the dog and cat that lost their lives, Rest in peace Pirate and Jackson, you didn’t deserve to die like this, it’s on your owners!

    • You expressed my feelings perfectly. Because the humans behaved irresponsibly, animal were placed in danger and made to suffer.

  2. A horrible tragedy for both pet owners…..and one that could have been so avoidable!! I know what farming and ranching communities are like….people let their pets wander. However, this is the down side. If the dogs had stayed on THEIR property and not been out roaming, they would have not killed this person’s pet and in return, the one dog would not have been killed.
PEOPLE!!! IN TODAYS WORLD YOU CAN NOT LET YOUR PETS ROAM FREELY!!! Contain them on your property or in your yard, it simply is not worth the risk of this kind of horrible event!
I NEVER condone the killing of a pet – however, if I was protecting MY PET……damn straight I would kill another to protect mine.

  3. I love Border Collies, but…. WHY weren’t the dogs kept on their own property? YES, I know how hard it is to keep that particular breed in check because they are smart and don’t like to be contained. If there’s a way to escape, they will: however, the dogs’ owner should have done everything humanly possible to make certain that they were. In this day and age there are too many things that can happen, too many monsters out there, especially humans, who mean them harm. This was partly and largely his fault.

HOWEVER, the owner of the cat is also to blame! Why wasn’t Pirate kept indoors? Cats should be kept inside because it isn’t safe outside? Again, there are MONSTERS out there: wild animals, including humans, abound, not to mention cars, disease, etc. It is inexcusable that Pirate was outside, especially when there is a possibility that, yes, a dog might attack him.

RIP Pirate. This was completely avoidable and I am so sorry.

  4. owners are responsible for where their dogs are. That is a horrible and sad situation. Sweet Pirate died a horrible death.

  5. You know, I may have done the same. Horrible tragedy to see your cat torn apart, RIP Pirate and condolences to all involved. Sad

  6. I’d take a bullet to protect my animals. I’m pretty sure I would have done the same thing to save my cat. I know the dog owner is hurting too. But it his his job to keep his animals safe and in control. RIP to the lives lost that day. It’s all very sad.

  7. I walk my cats on a leash on MY property, and had a problem with a neighbors dog running into my yard (no fences allowed in my community). So even if poor Pirate was on a leash these dogs could have attached him. I also was walking my 17 yo toy poodle and this same dog ran up the street and jumped all over my tiny arthritic dog. Dogs must be taught obedience and owners supervise them! RIP poor Pirate. I would have done the same as this owner…..
