A man from South Carolina died on Saturday after he was caught in the swift current at Rainbow Falls while trying to save his dog. The man had been visiting the falls with his wife and their dog.

According to the News Observer, John Shaffer, 42, jumped into the waters to chase after his dog. He quickly became swept away by the current  of the river about 100 feet away when he went over the waterfall. More than five hours later, Lake Toxaway Fire Chief Carmon West, along with six other agencies that came out to help, found Shaffer’s body in the Horsepasture River.

The Rainbow Falls are 150 feet high, and there are warning signs informing visitors of the slippery conditions near the falls. The dog has not been found. Tourists are encouraged to view the beautiful sights from below.

Rest in peace John Shaffer.

  1. My sincere condolences to John Shaffer’s family and friends for their loss of Mr Shaffer and their dog. I fear he did what many of us would have done confronted with such a situation (even though it’s probably not the right thing to do when the outcome is this). I could see myself doing something like this in an attempt to save one of my dogs. May they rest in peace.

  2. We that dedicate our heart’s and soul’s to OUR Beloved Pet’s Lose any sense of caution when faced the potential DANGERS that We come to face with at times!!! Would I do it again!! Afraid I would have to answer DAMN RIGHT !!!! Mr. Shaffer gave his heart and soul, and hopefully He will meet up with his Canine Companion at the Rainbow Bridge and they can pass together to the Other Side!!

    • Because they have to stay on earth longer to earn their “karma” and, especially, their special place in “hell”!
