A South Carolina man was arrested after he admitted to cutting a tumor off of his elderly dog’s body…to avoid paying a veterinarian for performing the surgery. According to 14 News, when 59-year-old Carson Lamar Cowles learned how much a veterinarian would charge to remove a tumor from his elderly dog’s abdomen, he decided to take care of the procedure at home.

The cruel situation

Cowles’ 15-year-old dachshund was allegedly “operated” on by her owner. The man phoned various veterinary offices to find out how much it would cost to have them stitch her back up. It was a veterinarian who alerted Lexington County animal service officials about the alleged crime.

After investigators were alerted to the situation, they obtained a search warrant and found the elderly dog at Cowles’ home on the 4000 block of Fish Hatchery Road. The dog was removed from Cowles’ custody and has received treatment from an actual veterinarian. Two other dogs were also taken from Cowles’ home and are being cared for by one of his family members.

Statement from officials

Lexington County Animal Control Director Roy Mefford told the news agency:

Pet ownership is something we take seriously,” Lexington County Animal Control Director Roy Mefford said.

“There are resources that are available for pet owners struggling to afford medical care for their pets so that animals don’t suffer from not receiving treatment from licensed professionals. Animal abuse is not tolerated in this County.”

Repercussions

Cowles was arrested on Wednesday and taken to the Lexington County Detention Center – he is facing a felony charge for animal abuse. He could spend up to five years behind bars if he is convicted.

  1. How is this dog now? Were they able to suture her up and provide any antibiotics she might need? Was the growth she had actually removed or was it still there? The vets should offer help to owners who can’t afford an operation of this kind and the man should have asked for help from all sources. His dog could have died and now he has lost his other 2 dogs who family members are watching.

  2. Absolutely no excuse for this, but it is true that many places have “sky high” veterinary costs and little, if any, resources to help them with these costs. Some surgeries can cost $5,000 to $8,000, and many vets do not accept payments. Also, there are many procedures and treatments pet insurance does not cover.

Something really needs to be done about this to prevent potential tragedies for pets.

  3. Dammit anyway – this savage maggot is not a man!! It doesn’t even qualify as an amoeba. It hasn’t been walking upright long enough to qualify as a neanderthal.

  4. Why in the world would you not ask a refuge for some help? Why not ask if you could pay by instalments. What I think is this moronic excuse for a human is too miserly to part with that amount of money just for his dog. Would have been more humane to pay for euthanasia, but I guess he’s too miserly even for that. I don’t get why people can’t (or won’t) ask around for advice on things that are outside their field of knowledge. Somebody, any friend, could have steered him in a better direction for the sake of this precious dog.
The tides of cruelty are turning, it’s waynpast time to have the justice system align its penalties with the severity of the crime. Next thing we’ll have people taking a hacksaw to their families for various maladies.
Thoughts and Prayers for the poor dog that he/she may heal well and fully recover from this nightmare and find a loving furever home, and that the other dogs will be monitored to be sure they are well loved and cared for by this monster’s relatives.

  5. SIMPLY A CASE of GROSS & UNCESSARY TORTURE to a Companion ANIMAL!!! Maybe someone should CASTRATE this individual with a pocket knife!!!

  6. I pray the wrath of God finds 59-year-old Carson Lamar Cowles with the SAME treatment he FORCED on his neglected dog, but 1,000 fold WORSE. Maybe an inmate will CUT him open and leave him to bleed out. Eye for an eye, ass wipe!
