In a most unusual rescue situation for fire fighters, a loyal parrot remained on his owner’s shoulders while the two of them had to be rescued from waist deep mud in a Belleville, Illinois park.

The parrot perched on the man’s shoulders is a regular sight around the area, but on Sunday afternoon the parrot flew off and landed in the middle of a mucky, recently dredged lake – he was stuck! So what’s a best friend to do? That’s right – the man, “Uncle Johnny” waded into the thick mud up to his waist to help, and moments later Uncle Johnny was stuck too!

According to the Belleville News Democrat, a passerby heard the man yelling for help and called the Belleville Fire Department. It took 15 minutes for the crew to stretch a series of ladders to reach Uncle Johnny and his parrot – who steadfastly hung on to his human’s back.

No one was hurt, and Fire Chief Tom Pour can write this up as one of the oddest rescues he has ever participated.

  1. WHAT WONDERFUL documentation of a Strange indeed Rescue !!! This Shows The TOTAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE and DEVOTION of THIS CARING MAN & His PARROT!!! All Pet Rescue Regular Readers CAN PUT OUR SELVE”S in the Same Position and You Damn Well , same as myself , would have done the same for out beloved “companions and friends of the animal kingdom”..IN LESS THAN A HEART BEAT… Kodo’s to the Fire Rescue!!! They were right on top of the issue….

  2. What loyalty they have for each other. Even though the parrot initially flew off and got stuck in the mud, I believe if he hadn’t gotten stuck, he would have flown back to his owner and not flown away. Stuck right on his person’s back during the whole rescue. Thanks firefighters for a job well done. Are there for more than just fires.

  3. Wow!!!!!! This bird is both smart & loyal!!!!!

I don’t want to be a “negative Nellie”, but my friends who have birds never walk around with them on their shoulders outside. There have been too many birds snatched off shoulders by hawks (@ least in our area this is “common”)…….

I hope this NEVER happens to this wonderful parrot (hope he lives out his full lifespan with his fave human)!!!

    WTG parrot!!!
