On Sunday, a 22-year-old woman was mauled to death by a lion at a nature conservatory near Burlington, North Carolina. Alexandra Black, from Indiana, died at the Conservators Centre.

According to CbsNews, the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office stated a routine cleaning had been underway under the guidance of a trained animal keeper. One of the lions, a male named Matthai, escaped from  a locked area and approached the group and suddenly grabbed out for Black. Emergency workers struck the lion several times with tranquilizers to rescue the woman, but had to shoot the lion.

Alexandra had been a recent graduate of Indiana State University and had been working as a college intern for two weeks.

According to its website, the Conservators Centre is located on a 45-acre wooded area and is the home to 80 animals including 21 species. Living on the campus are 15 lions and tigers removed from egregious conditions in Ohio 14 years ago. Of the 10 lions who arrived at the Center in 2004, three were pregnant and gave birth to over 10 cubs. The center does not breed.
