On Friday, new information was released about the condition of an opossum who was viciously beaten by teens in North Carolina. According to Tails of Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary, the male possum has been cleared from “life threatening” injuries.

The sanctuary stated:

Mr Opossum has been cleared from life threatening injuries!!!!! He is bruised and banged up and has a major concussion but should be able to recover. It will be several weeks until we expect to see improvement. He is very lucky to not have sustained more severe injuries. He was bleeding from his ears and nose on intake.

According to the sanctuary, the possum would have died if no one had intervened on his behalf. The injured animal will be treated and cared for until he is healthy once again.

The abuse this opossum suffered

The opossum was found being beaten with a 2×4 on Edgewater Lane in Richlands. A woman saw some teenagers beating this handsome boy when she stopped them and brought him to the sanctuary.

The misunderstood opossum

Many people incorrectly assume that opossums are pests which should be destroyed. It is important for the truth about these misunderstood creatures be shared. Opossums have a low body temperature which protects them from contracting rabies. They are scavengers who eat insects (estimated to consume 5000 ticks per year!), garbage, fruit and dead animals. Possums are the only marsupial in North America. Though opossums may look fierce, they rarely attack and if threatened, they are known to “play dead” in self defense.

  1. Is anyone trying to apprehend and charge the hooligans? They need a nice long vacay in the free hotel, a big fat fine to pay for Mr. Opposum’s medical/surgical/rehabilitative care & a lifetime ban on ever again having care & control of any other animal.

  2. I for ONE am very thankful this little Guy Get’s a second chance in a safer environment !!! The lady that confronted these TOTAL “DICKWEED’S” ACTUALLY was very LUCKY they didn’t BEAT and Maim her… I HOPE ( but wonder if these of the product of Rich Ruthless so-called “parents” who were unfortunate to produce DEMONIC Narcissistic No-Accounts that need to be used for fodder for the pigs in a feedlot””

  3. Thanks to Tails of Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary, for saving this possum as well as the woman who stopped those cretins from doing more damage and possibly killing this animal. The mother and baby possums were not so lucky on the 14th of this month when teens took a baseball bat to the mother and doused the babies in some type of fluid. Thank god they were arrested and hope they can do the same for this possums attackers. We need to take these crimes and beatings of animals more seriously and have punishments that fit the crimes. Just because they are teens is no excuse for a slap on the wrist.

  4. More thugs in the making. Hope she found out who that were and reported them. Have had them in my yard many times.

  5. These damn punks deserve one thing – a fatal drive by – they have proven they are nothing more than ghetto rats and if there is any repercussions for their cruelty I do hope they are found dead in the gutter. They deserve no less. They will never change – it is inbred in them to be cruel to anything that cannot defend itself – spineless jerks who would run crying for Mommy if confronted by someone who COULD defend themselves. Yes, may a drive by be in their near future.
