In Rexburg, Idaho, an alleged intoxicated owner beat his small dog to death on Tuesday with a rolled up newspaper when the dog refused to come out of its kennel cage.

According to the Idaho Statesman, a woman contacted police stating she heard a dog whimpering and in distress. By the time the Rexburg Police arrived, the small dog had died. The owner, a 66-year-old man not yet identified, told officers he had been trying to clean the dog’s eyes, but the dog would not come out of its cage. While drunk, the owner tried to pull the dog out and stated he may have choked the dog, and then beat the pup with a rolled up newspaper until it died.

Puppies were also discovered at the home and have all been moved to the Rexburg Animal Shelter.

The owner faces animal cruelty charges.
