A man from Normal, Illinois who told a judge on Tuesday that he was “clueless” that killing two dogs was illegal was sentenced to 24 months on a conditional discharge for aggravated animal cruelty in the death of two dogs.

According to the Bloomington Pantagraph, Gary Eustice, 72, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated animal cruelty, a Class 4 felony. Two charges of euthanizing companion animals and one charge of littering for dumping the bodies of the dead dogs along a country road were dismissed. Eustice killed the dogs by locking them in the garage with a running vehicle.

An image released by the McLean County Sheriff’s Office in December 2017, showed Eustice’s vehicle driving away after the dogs’ bodies were dumped. A witness took the photo.

At the sentencing, Eustice apologized to the judge for killing the dogs that had been left with his family stating he wanted to save the cost of euthanizing the dogs at a veterinarian’s office. He stated he was “clueless” that killing the dogs had been a crime. The dogs reportedly were very old and aggressive.

In addition to the 24 months on a conditional discharge, Eustice will also be required to serve 200 hours of community service with an organization that helps animals.
