During a disturbing discovery of a dog that “appeared to be emaciated, dehydrated, very weak and in excruciating pain,” a hunter was charged with animal cruelty after authorities found the dog caught in a coyote trap. Late last week Charlotte, North Carolina resident, Alex Kraig Cummins, 30, was charged as the owner of the trap and for violating the law and not checking the trap every 24-hours as required.

According to the Statesville& Landmark, investigators from Iredell County Animal Services, near Troutman, responded to a report of a large brown and black Akita and shepherd mix, found with its foot caught in a coyote trap on December 14, 2017. Officers stated the dog had been stuck in the trap for “several days.” The contraption severed the bones in three of the dog’s toes which remained attached to the dog by only a small piece of skin.

Further investigation by police found another trap in the woods close by which did not meet state regulations.

Cummins has been charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals and was released on an unsecured $2,500 bond.  The dog has been under the care of a rescue group and is receiving medical attention.

  1. That bastard should be left out in the woods for a week with one of those traps attached to EACH of his legs so he can’t move (I’d make it longer if I could).

Maybe then the POS would understand what a cruel, evil, vile, disgusting creature he actually is.

THEN let the courts have him. He should have been charged with a felony, not a misdemeanor.

  2. This guy needs to pay all vet fees as well. Asshole. These traps need to be banned. They cause excessive pain and suffering.

  3. Traps of any kind should be illegal as there are many times when their intended victim is not the animal is was trying to catch. For this dog to be in such excruciating pain for 3 days in unimaginable considering the trapper is suppose to check his traps within 24 hours and obviously he didn’t. Traps of this kind need to be banned. These kill too many innocent animals. Federal law should ban all death traps now.

  4. In other words this man got a slap on the wrist for maiming, torturing and almost killing a dog.
Why is it ok to torture one animal and not another. These laws are bogus

  5. Watch the courts. No Patti-cake or we all scream bloody murder. Traps need banned. Alex Cummins need some prison time. Cummins need to pay all vet bills , compensation to the dogs owner, forbidden to ever trap again

  6. How I wish the ones who set this horrible traps would get stuck in them themselves. How this poor dog suffered, whoever owns that trap needs to pay the vet bills at the very least!

  7. I live in Sevier County, Utah – 77 percent federal land. December 2017 while hiking, my dog got caught in a foot trap. Trap was set on highest tension setting, ended up having her toes amputated. One week later, left dogs at home and went hiking and caught ball of left foot in trap and right mid foot to ankle in another trap, traps buried, not marked. Perfectly legal. This winter 3 dogs had legs amputated and one dog put down due to traps by my vet. On all public lands foot traps for coyotes can be set out all year – Dept of Agriculture pays $50 a coyote. So if you come to Utah traps can legally be buried on trails. Beware!

  8. The individual (POS) that starved the Mule we fought and was awarded possession of IS a (“FKING) trapper… these people have NO Soul’s …. like he told he that he was a humane trapper … used live traps and then beat them to death so as to not ruin the pelt… NOW YOU call that HUMANE!!! Sociopaths and Psychopaths Make up the majority of this inhumane profession I do believe… In Casper, Wyoming a couple of beautiful Saint Bernard’s were Killed while being walked by their owners on federal land with ( I believe are snare traps and you have to use pliers to cut the wire ) who the Hell carries cutters while out walking… these traps were also not marked, and were right next to a subdivision!!!

    • Not too far from where we live a beautiful Labrador Retriever lost his life because he got his head trapped in one of these horrible traps. The poor young girl was walking the dog on a leash and he went to sniff the trap, she didn’t see in time and he was caught, she couldn’t get the trap to release and by the time help arrived the dog had died. A man that had been hired by the county to get rid of vermin had illegally set the trap and cut a hole in a fence so the animals outside the fence could get to the trap. He was arrested but I never really heard what they did as far as punishment. There is NOTHING humane in these traps, and too many innocent dogs get hurt or killed in them, they need to be outlawed!

  9. Misdemeanor??? $2500.00 bail??? I’d like to put all 4 of this a-hole’s limbs in similar traps and let him suffer for days. But my conservative, pro-hunting, pro-NRA friends will see it differently.
