Hound found struggling to survive in the woods

Earlier this month, a gravely injured hound was found struggling to survive in the woods of rural St. Johns County. The dog, dubbed Sami, was picked up by a good Samaritan and taken in by Florida Urgent Rescue (F.U.R.).

The rescue group immediately took the injured and emaciated hound to a veterinarian; according to the organization, her wounds are consistent with having been thrown from a car. There is speculation that Sami was dumped by a hunter who no longer wanted or needed her…and she has been trying to survive for the last several months on her own.

Though Sami is out of harm’s way and recuperating with a foster home, and veterinary care, she is not out of the woods. On February 11, Mike Merrill, the rescue group’s founder, updated Facebook followers about Sami’s struggles:

Her wounds are raw and bleeding, and she’s getting worse. We took her back to the vet today, and we started a new game plan… a different antibiotic, no more baths, we’re trying Silver Sulfadiazine cream on her open wounds, and we’ll take her to St. Francis for treatment in their Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber. She’s going to have a long road ahead, but she has a wonderful foster who is taking good care of her.

Funds are being collected to help Sami recuperate from her pitiful condition. Click here to donate. Or donate directly to St. Francis Animal Hospital at: www.saintfrancisanimalhospital.org (mention Sami) or by phone at 904-674-7223.

  1. She probably wasn’t a very good hunting dog so the POS owner threw her away like she was trash. I hope she can make a complete recovery. After all she’s endured, through no fault of her own, she deserves a wonderful forever home.

  2. Hunters who use these dogs until there is nothing left of them, then toss them out like garbage. Someone knows who this dog belongs to and it should be made public and a decent reward for any information leading to the arrest of this scum. Hope his family does the same to him.

  3. Those that treat animals like disposable objects deserve only one punishment – this being Florida this maggot puke should be hogtied and dumped in the Everglades – the only thing they are good for is gator lunch. I would have no problem feeding the gators with this bastard’s flesh.

  4. Wish there were a way to find out who did this to her……..sooo KARMA!!!!!!!!!! You know what monster hurt this sweet dog……. GET THEM …..NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Every next day I like people less and animals more. Except for those few good ones (people) that have the hearts of gold and rescue animals like Sami. Thank you F.U.R.
