A German shepherd, who was so horribly neglected that he nearly froze to death on the end of a chain, has died. The dog, dubbed Caesar, had been dropped at the Kansas City shelter in December 2016 – he showed signs of neglect and abuse and he was near death after being left to suffer in the cold.

Caesar was taken in by the Missouri German Shepherd Rescue and nursed back to health – the same rescue agency which helped save his life, announced his death on Saturday. The Facebook post reads:

We at the Missouri German Shepherd Rescue (MOGS) are heartbroken to tell you that our beloved Caesar lost his battle with cancer this morning.

Adding:

He did go through cancer treatment and even went into remission. But we recently found the cancer had returned, and we knew our time with him was now very limited. In these last few days the cancer spread rapidly. With great sadness, his rescuers and caretakers at MOGS made the agonizing decision to let him go. He slipped away quietly at his foster home, surrounded by people he loved and who loved him.

Thanks to a supportive community, and a loving foster family, Caesar was able to enjoy 15 months of a wonderful life…his rescuers wrote:

Caesar was a fighter. His message was simple: Fight animal cruelty. Fight it hard. Take it seriously. Abolish it. Make the consequences harsh. Put abusers in jail. Caesar barely survived cruelty that lasted for years — and his legacy is a reminder to us all that we have to come together to stop this terrible cruelty. Caesar came to us at Christmas, a gift and an inspiration. He left us at Easter, a reminder that hope and life are eternal.

  1. Rest in Peace Caesar. Your foster parents and the shelter that initially took you in will miss you horribly, but for almost 2 years you were truly loved and can now go on your next journey, healthy, and meet your friends. Thank God for shelters like this and those fosters who are there to heal and love these animals.

  4. So sorry for the loss of Caesar. The Missouri German Shepherd Rescue is to be commended for giving Caesar 15 months of love. They showed him there was kindness and love in this world, something he hadn’t experienced before. May he rest and peace and run and play at the Rainbow Bridge.

  5. Caesar never knew love or kindness until it was too late – and I thank German Shepherd Rescue for giving it to him for the last months of his life – NOW – the human maggot that was so cruel, neglectful and uncaring to this beautiful dog needs to be held responsible for Caesar’s death – he did not have to die, and due to this hunk of sewer slime’s treatment or lack thereof – Caesar basically never had a chance. PLEASE hold this subhuman hun of trash responsible – this should be a FELONY – to allow an animal to suffer due to an owner’s neglect and abuse is reprehensible and they need to pay a steep price.
