A 12-year-old gelding, now named “Teddy Bear Highway” was found on Friday wandering Interstate 75 between the Micanopy exit and Wacahoota Road has captured the hearts of animal lovers as his injuries are healing.

According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, who captured him and transferred him to the Springhill Equine Veterinaray Clinic, stated the friendly horse had been “demanding attention, carrots and walking well.” A Sunday morning update included the following optimistic prognosis:

“(UPDATE, Sunday Morning – our Investigation Continues: His docs say that Highway is having a great Sunday morning…demanding attention, carrots, and walking well. Most of his wounds are superficial, and he’ll get his bandages changed a little later while he continues antibiotics for a bit. His TLC prescription is doing quite well – both from his caregivers and the hundreds of thousands of you that have checked in on him.”

The horse had no identifying information – no microchip, tattoo or freeze brand. He appeared to have been well-cared for except for what happened to him which caused multiple road rashes. It is suspected he either fell out of a trailer or was hit by a vehicle. Stolen Horse International, also referred to as NetPosse.com, has been sharing the horse’s photo and accompanying information.

Springhill Equine Veterinary Clinic established a GoFundMe account for his immediate-need expenses, while looking for his family. That site is https://www.gofundme.com/quotteddy-bear-highwayquot-emergen… – as always, please be wary of other efforts to gather money on his behalf. Nearly $9,000 has been raised for him; donations are no longer needed.

The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate:

“Now, as your Sheriff’s Office, let us do a little Rumor Control and ease some concerns: This is very much an active investigation for us, so we’re not going to speculate on what, how, and/or who happened to Highway until we know – for sure. There are several comments from and about people floating around and, well, we’ll follow up on every lead to ensure we get to the facts of the case…you can help Highway by not spreading information that our Rural Services team hasn’t been able to confirm on this page. Sending specific tips to us via private message is a great way to keep his case moving in the right direction.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Combined Communications Center at 352.955.1818 or Springhill Equine Veterinary Clinic at 352.472.1620.
