In Fernandina Beach, a man was arrested on Wednesday after authorities claim he put live pets into a trash compactor. Phu Tran, 45, faces four felony counts of animal cruelty.
According to ActionNewsJax, deputies from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office were called to Tran’s apartment complex after a neighbor witnessed Tran putting cages with live animals inside into the trash compactor. The animals included a guinea pig, four birds and two rabbits. Trans then turned the machine on trying to crush the animals and their cages. The surviving animals – two rabbits and a bird have been transferred to the Nassau County Animal Services. The three birds and the guinea pig were dead by the time authorities arrived.
Tran had been sent a letter recently from the apartment complex management ordering him to get rid of the pets or face a fine of $800.
Tran was booked into the Nassau County Jail where he is being held without bond. If found guilty of all counts, he could face 20 years in prison.
