A Washington family’s dog is being hailed a hero for defending a teenage boy who found himself in harm’s way when armed intruders broke into his home in Des Moines. According to Q13 News, the teen hid in a closet and called 911 on Wednesday – he relayed what was happening to the dispatcher.

Des Moines police Cmdr. Doug Jenkins stated:

“He heard noises and voices, ran upstairs and hid in closet. He continued relaying everything he heard on the phone with dispatch. The dog in the residence was barking. Then he heard breaking glass, and the dog still barking. Then he heard gunshots and the dog was no longer barking.”

The dog, a German shepherd named Rex, did his utmost to protect the teen from the intruders. On a fundraiser established for Rex’s veterinary expenses, the alarming situation is explained:

“Today we witnessed the most beautiful and unconditional love. Rex the héroe dog, a member of our family risked his life and took three gunshots as he protected his human best friend , his master, his brother while their house got vandalized with them inside.”

According to details in the fundraiser, Rex attacked the intruders downstairs and then ran upstairs when the teen was at risk of being harmed – it was there that Rex was injured after being shot.

“As they entered the room where my nephew was hiding in the closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger. Sadly they shot Rex 4 times and finally Rex, the héroe dog gave up in his battle. It was the sirens who scared them away. My nephew was protected by his eternal friend until the last bit of strength he had in him to do what his unconditional, loving instinct told him to.”

According to a GoFundMe update, Rex is being treated at the Blue Pearl Vet in Renton. The veterinary clinic is accepting donations on Rex’s behalf.

According to Q13, the intruders escaped and the home’s glass sliding door was shattered.

  1. Prayers to Rex and his family. He is an amazing dog and may all good things happen to him and he pulls through these gun shoot wounds. As for those who broke in, hope those scums are caught and thrown in jail for the remainder of their lives in solitary.

  2. People who victimize other people should be put on an island with others who do the same and let them go at it
